Food Fight: The cookie clash

The debate over the best cookie can stir passionate discussions among friends and family. Preference can be interesting between individuals as there is always a reasoning behind that preferred cookie choice. Illustration by Van Nguyen/The Daily Campus

Welcome back to another edition of Food Fight! Every week, we will discuss two of our favorite foods or orders and battle it out to see who wins. This week, we are diving into cookies and deciding which kind of cookie is the best.

Naiiya: I want my cookies at the most basic source possible: sugar

Sugar cookies are the best cookies because they funnel sugar into my mouth without being plain scoops of sugar. Sugar cookies are a classic besides chocolate chip cookies. I know when I am eating an overly chocolatey chocolate chip cookie, I get completely sick of the chocolate. I need that balance of the plain sugar base. That’s why I have switched over to plain sugar cookies.

They are my forever go-to Insomnia order, yet I feel like not everyone is aware of the secret of sugar cookies. I think they capture exactly what I need in a cookie: the base. Maybe I want extra toppings like chocolate chips or toffee, but you need that base to make it amazing. Without the sugar base, there is no cookie. It is a cookie in its purest form.

Charlotte: Browned butter toffee chocolate chip cookies are a delicious twist on a classic

Let’s say you want a cookie. Nine times out of 10, you’re probably going to be handed a classic chocolate chip cookie — which is delicious! But imagine that you’re handed a chocolate chip cookie with crispy, browned edges, bits of salty-sweet toffee and the beautiful scent of vanilla and caramelized browned butter. I can’t speak for everyone, but I think that would be a worthy upgrade that takes the best of a chocolate chip cookie and makes it better. You can’t beat a batch of warm, homemade browned butter toffee chocolate chip cookies. There’s a delicious simplicity to it with complex, powerful flavors. To be honest, I’m not the biggest chocolate fan, but in a good cookie, the bits of melted chocolate mix with the golden base to create a wonderful combination.

For the cookie non-traditionalists, macaroons are where it’s at. I love the fun flavors and combinations that you can get with macaroons, they’re very versatile and taste delicious with almost any flavor! The combination of almond flour with the delicate brittle shell and chewy interior makes for a perfect bite. The best kind of macaroons are the ones with a delicious and chewy bite of sweet coconut, with the occasional chocolate drizzle or dipped bottom. I will admit that macaroons can get pretty pricey and a bit challenging to make yourself, but with a bit of trial and error, they really aren’t as difficult to make as people make them out to be!

Cookie Compromise

However, we can both agree that a chocolate chip cookie can hit. Almost everyone loves a classic chocolate chip cookie, and you can find them everywhere! For a fun change from the classic, M&M cookies are also fun — especially with the extra candy exterior crunch of the M&Ms.
