It was a good Tuesday night for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris. In front of 67 million Americans, she managed to use her years of experience as a prosecutor to run circles around Republican nominee and former president Donald Trump during the nationally televised presidential debate. While Trump appeared angry, disjointed and, at times, completely disconnected from reality, she spoke directly to Americans as a calm, grounded unifier. Yet, this was, in truth, only the second-best thing to happen to the Harris/Walz campaign that night. Immediately after the end of the debate, Taylor Swift announced her official endorsement for the Democratic nominee, referring to her as “a steady-handed, gifted leader.” The significance of this decision from both a strategic and cultural perspective cannot be understated. It presents as the cherry on top of one of the most revolutionary political marketing campaigns this nation has seen in years. If I had any doubts about a Democratic victory this November, they’re gone now.
It’s safe to say that Taylor Swift has had a pretty good year for herself as well. Recently, the American public has watched her rise above typical levels of celebrity and become closer to a worldwide phenomenon, one the likes of which has never been seen before. The Eras Tour, which started in March 2023, is easily on track to become the biggest tour ever, bringing economic upheaval and occasionally seismic activity wherever it goes. A recent survey found that 53 percent of U.S. adults self-identify as fans of Swift, with 16 percent identifying as “avid” fans of the star. It is difficult to describe the full extent of her impact on American culture, but it’s safe to say that when she speaks, the entire public listens.
This was best exemplified in the time immediately after she endorsed the Harris campaign, which caused about 338,000 clicks toward a federal voter registration site less than a day after the post. This is a major uptick from the average of 40,000 in the month leading up to the debate. Although it’s impossible to say how many people actually completed registration from that post, the fact that it got around 10 million likes (roughly two percent of the U.S. population) and generated almost as many clicks as there are people in Wyoming speaks to its extreme impact regardless. As the days go on the impact is surely going to continue, with new abilities to fundraise and market based on the singer’s immense profile.
In terms of marketing, this caps off one of the biggest and best marketing campaigns in political history. This summer, the Harris campaign flipped the switch with Democratic voters after the withdrawal of President Joe Biden’s campaign through the usage of musical icons Chappell Roan, Charli XCX and Beyonce. The images of these artists and their respective songs of the summer, alongside a special focus on abortion rights, promoted a strong feminist brand that has electrified the Democratic base this summer. And Swift fits into this narrative perfectly. The presentation of herself in the endorsement as a “childless cat lady” brings a strong message of independence and female power, while the heavy focus on the policies of the Harris/Walz combo keeps the message positive. The new ability of the Harris campaign to market and fundraise based on Swiftie media could be a very useful asset coming into the last few months of the season as well. The acquisition of Swift’s support in this race completes the metaphorical bingo card of star power in this race and it left the best for last.
As for election day, the potential for a tangible impact is high. For example, in one poll conducted in April of voters in Tennessee, one think tank found that about four percent of people would be more likely to vote for a candidate if Swift endorsed them. Although these potential votes probably won’t matter in the red state of Tennessee, the ability for similar numbers to swing battleground states is real. Once again, it’ll be impossible to tell for certain and exit polls probably won’t ask about the influence of pop stars on voters. Still, the numbers don’t lie, and they smile kindly upon the Harris campaign after this endorsement.
This campaign season, if any could be described in such a way, has been anything but normal. The exit of Biden from the race after securing the nomination, the assassination attempt on Trump, the rapid ascension of Harris, the nationwide wave of protests over Palestine and now this, have made the past months a rollercoaster of political turmoil. Yet, as time marches forward toward November, things seem to be turning towards Harris. Swift continues this trend, giving the campaign the support of one of the biggest celebrities in history with a cult following that strikes fear in the hearts of its enemies. It is a thematic marketing match made in Heaven, and now it’s time to see what comes of it.
