The UConn Huskies (5-1-1) concluded their nonconference slate with their sixth win in a row against Texas A&M (5-3).
With Big East play on the horizon, UConn sought to make a statement win to prove they have what it takes to be competitive in the conference. They achieved exactly that after stunning the Aggies 6-0 at home.
In the opening minutes of the game, the Huskies began the match with relentless offensive pressure that put Aggie’s defense to the test. UConn was close to netting one early after both teams scrambled to gain possession of the ball. The Aggies soon responded to the Huskies’ aggression and nearly scored from a corner in the sixth minute, but UConn goalkeeper Kaitlyn Mahoney was able to clear the ball after it reached the goal line. It became clear in just the first 10 minutes of the match that there would be a fixture of aggressive offenses on both sides.
It was only a matter of time before either team got on the board. In the sixteenth minute, UConn was the team to strike first with a corner kick. Joyce Ryder, who took the corner, was able to send it into the middle of the box, and Maddie Fried capitalized on the opportunity and put the Huskies in the lead early in the first half. The Aggies had to respond and found an opportunity in the twenty-sixth minute through a header, but it was Mahoney again who was able to save the ball and deny Texas A&M a chance to equalize.
Midway through the first half, the Aggies made many attempts to score, rushing through the UConn defense and outshooting UConn. However, in Mahoney fashion, she was able to clear all of Aggie’s attempts to keep the Huskies in the lead. After multiple substitutions from the Aggies, the rest of the half was mainly played in the middle of the field with Texas A&M on the attack, giving UConn an opponent that could rival their frontline and truly test their defense.
At the end of the half, UConn was back on offense and unsatisfied with a one-goal lead. In the forty-first minute, the Huskies were awarded a free kick, and Sophie McCarthy was able to extend the UConn lead after taking possession of a deflected ball. Just one minute after that goal, Chioma Okafor made a late push and kept the play alive, allowing Brooke Walonis to take possession and bury the ball into the back of the net, giving the Huskies a three-goal advantage late in the first half. Any hope of a Texas A&M comeback seemed to fade away in a matter of minutes.

The Huskies entered the second half with their foot on the gas—even with a three-goal advantage, they wanted more. In the forty-seventh minute, Ryder took a left-footed shot and scored from outside the box, extending UConn’s lead to four and marking her first goal of the season. The Aggie’s defense was falling apart and could not materialize anything on their frontline. UConn took advantage of the shaken Texas A&M defense and scored again, this time coming from Anaya Johnson, off her right foot and from inside the box. The Aggies did attempt to build momentum and began to get past the midfield. However, Mahoney again deterred any attempts from the Texas A&M side.
Almost every chance UConn had to score, they did, and that continued in the 69th minute. After being awarded a corner kick, the Huskies extended the lead to a stunning six-goal advantage after a header from McCarthy, scoring her second goal of the game. The rest of the half remained quiet, and UConn secured their fourth shutout of the season after what was a relentless offensive show.
The Huskies enter Big East play with all of the momentum on their side. With six wins in a row and a dominant win against a competitive team like Texas A&M, there is much to look forward to for this program. The Huskies will begin Big East play on Sunday at St. John’s, with kickoff slated at 1 p.m.
