Field Hockey: UConn eyeing strong finish to the month

The UConn field hockey team heads into this weekend ranked No. 11 in the nation after starting the season unranked. Quickly defeating two nationally ranked teams, the Huskies now find themselves in the running to make it to the national tournament.

The Huskies will be doing plenty of traveling this weekend. On Friday, Sept. 27, they will travel to Washington D.C. to square off against the Georgetown Hoyas. Then, they will move to Newark, Delaware, to take on the Delaware Blue Hens.

The matchup against the Hoyas will be the second conference game for both squads. Connecticut took on, and defeated, Temple at home last weekend, while Georgetown fell to Villanova by a score of 6-1.

The Georgetown Hoyas have struggled this season, with a 2-5 record. Their wins include Lock Haven and Long Island University.

The Huskies’ game against the Hoyas will kick off at noon on Friday at the Maryland Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. With a win, UConn will have a 2-0 record in conference play. The Delaware Blue Hens hold a strong 4-3 record, with losses to No. 16 Penn State by a score of 5-4, and to No. 6 Iowa 1-0.

Coming off a 2-0 weekend, defeating both Towson and American, the Blue Hens are looking to carry this momentum into this week in hopes of taking down the eleventh ranked Huskies.

Based on the previous matchups the Blue Hens have had with other ranked competitions, this will not be an easy game for the Huskies as they will have to face Delaware on their home turf. This matchup will kick off at noon as well and will be played at the Blue Hens home, Fred P. Rullo Stadium.

The Huskies are hoping to continue to dominate, as with a two-win weekend, and could find themselves inside the top ten going into next weekend. Big wins this weekend would also set up the program nicely for any postseason action that takes place, and with the way they are playing, that possibility looms ever so great.
