On September 28th, 2024, the Connecticut National Guard hosted a Welcome Home ceremony for the 12 soldiers assigned to the 146th Cyber Detachment, and about a dozen soldiers from the 242nd Engineer Battalion’s Construction Management Team were sent off ceremonially. This ceremony was hosted at the William A. O’Neill State Armony in Hartford, Conn.

Connecticut’s National Guard is a part-time state-based military program that serves under their state governor to respond to state emergencies or disasters, according to their official website. Additionally, these units can be called upon to defend the nation when needed.

According to a press release by the Connecticut National Guard’s office, the ceremony was commemorated by Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Senator Richard Blumenthal, Major General Francis Evon, and several other honored guests like fellow service members, family and friends.

The soldiers of the 146th Cyber Detachment team who were returning were awarded medals and recognition for their achievements while on deployment. Each unit’s soldier was also presented with a Connecticut state flag to honor their incredible service to our nation.

Connecticut State flags were also presented to the deploying 242nd Engineer Battalion as is a tradition for deploying units. Each deploying unit is given a Connecticut flag while out on deployment to give them a piece of home on their journey ahead, according to the Connecticut National Guard’s Press Release.

Major General Evon, the commander of the Connecticut National Guard, commented, “The Connecticut National Guard continues to answer our nation’s call, proving time and again that we are a premier fighting force.” According to Evon, “We stand ready to defend our nation, knowing that freedom is not free, and that it is through the bravery of our Soldiers that we remain the land of the free.”
