If we’re lucky in the Opinion section, we work through our beliefs completely and support them with great arguments. But sometimes, we don’t need a deeper reason to hold our convictions. Rapid Fire is for those tweet-length takes that can be explained in just a sentence or two — no more justification needed.
A week ago today, Senator JD Vance and Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota met for their first and likely last debate before November’s election. While the debate was largely civil, it had its funny moments.
In this Rapid Fire, writers gave their opinions on the question: What was your favorite moment from the Vice-Presidential debate?
Evelyn Pazan, Associate Opinion Editor: Any time Margaret Brennan absolutely clocked either of the candidates. For example, “Thank you, Senator, for describing the legal process.” There’s nothing like a woman in power.
Tomas Hinckley, Opinion Editor: I’m a huge fan of dark humor, and there’s nothing quite like the darkness of our future in this country! To me, the funniest part was how JD Vance gives major uncanny valley constantly while Tim Walz looks like the whitest possible version of the Lorax.
Patrick Minnerly, Contributor: My favorite moment came when Tim Walz asked JD Vance directly if Trump lost the 2020 election. Vance, obviously torn between acknowledging reality or kowtowing to Trump’s ego, could only respond, “Tim, I’m focused on the future.”
Dan Stark, Campus Correspondent: JD Vance looking directly at the camera, like Jim from The Office, as I always love anything that can be turned into a meme format (except when Vance used himself in his own meme).
