Whether you dread it or love it, the PSL (Pumpkin Spice Latte) has become the emblem of a crisp fall day in Storrs. It’s a heartfelt classic that never fails to do us wrong for whatever fall activity we are eager to partake in. Though enchanting, the widespread fame of the PSL can leave you longing for a more distinctive autumn beverage. I have recently scouted some new flavors to spice up your run-of-the mill coffee palate from all my favorite spots in Storrs. So, throw on a chunky sweater and settle into your favorite fall study spot before grabbing one of these autumn coffee concoctions.
Apple Crisp Oat Milk Shaken Espresso at Starbucks:
Elizabeth Bennet’s pursuit of Darcy in “Pride and Prejudice” is similar to that of mine for Starbucks’ Apple Crisp Oat Milk Shaken Espresso. Dare I say this drink is better than the PSL and it’s been my go-to drink daily. Due to its decadent apple flavor and strong churns of espresso, this apple espresso combines the refreshing yet tart notes of apple with the warm and aromatic essence of cinnamon. If you are still yearning for that hint of pumpkin after a sip, you can simply add pumpkin cold foam for an extra kick of autumn delight.
Butter Pecan Iced Coffee at Dunkin’:
For those Dunkin’ fans reading, I thought I’d need to give my go-to Dunkin order that is both comforting and invigorating for this spooky season. The Butter Pecan Iced Coffee made with your milk of choice delegates a warm, nutty and indulgent feel. The salty-sweet combination adds a delightful contrast that elevates the overall flavor profile. Whether you’re a fan of an inviting sweetness or a bold velvety sensation, this classic combination is guaranteed to hit all the right notes in your beloved cup of coffee.
Maple Latte at Dog Lane:
If you’re a Gilmore Girls fan such as myself, I often fantasize about an autumn afternoon in a small-town coffee shop and find fulfillment in that fantasy downtown at Dog Lane Cafe. My favorite menu item currently isn’t food, but the Iced Maple Latte with maple cold foam. The addition of pure maple syrup lends a warm and caramelized sweetness, while the ground cinnamon foam adds a delightfully light and nutty essence. This drink blends its rich creamy texture and warm aromatic spices in either a hot or iced drink depending on your preference.
Dirty Chai:
Whether enjoyed on its own or as a delightful accompaniment to a cozy autumn afternoon, a dirty chai is a must-try for any coffee or tea enthusiast. For those not intertwined with the realm of sweet treat drinks, a dirty chai is simply a chai tea, steamed milk and a single espresso shot. You can pretty much get this drink at any cafe and from my experience, Starbucks makes it best. A dirty chai is as cozy as they come and a great alternative for those who don’t love the taste of strong coffee but wish to indulge in an autumn beverage.
At home tips:
While the allure of grabbing a seasonal coffee creation from your favorite local cafe is undeniable, the joy of crafting these cozy concoctions at home can be equally rewarding (and better for the bank account). My best recommendation for making an at-home fall coffee is to get the pumpkin creamer by Chobani and use a K-cup of a dark roast. It’s a bold style cup-of-Joe that will never fail if you don’t want to spend the extra buck on a to-go cup of coffee.
