Well, it finally happened. After much anticipation from both Instagram Live and videos from his “One Night At A Time Tour,” Morgan Wallen released his new single “Love Somebody” this past weekend. Featuring a chorus centered around “I just wanna love somebody who won’t leave a hole in my heart,” Wallen has not shied away from the heartbreak country genre, although this single does feature experimentation by the artist.
Throughout the song, it is easy to notice the “Whiskey Glasses” singer utilizing unique guitar work, and Wallen attributes this to his Latin influences. Considering this song is likely teasing his newest project, we can infer that his latest album will be something we haven’t seen from Wallen before.
“‘Love Somebody’ is a little bit of a new approach lyrically and sonically. I wanted to try something different, with what I wanted to talk about, how I wanted it to sound, and we were inspired by Latin-leaning influences,” Wallen noted. “I’m really excited about this song and pumped that it is out.”
“Love Somebody” features many unique elements. Perhaps the most noticeable facet of this single is the one-of-a-kind blend between pop and country that Wallen has mastered. This blend makes this song more accessible to music listeners and could serve as a “bridge song” for listeners trying to enter either genre.
For instance, some traditional pop listeners would hear the country elements of this song, between Wallen’s voice and lyricism, and from there, could choose to listen to more. On the other hand, both the beat and catchy tune that the Grammy-nominated artist uses could turn some traditional country listeners onto the pop genre.
Of course, when talking about Wallen, it is hard to talk about any of his songs without talking about his message. While his “heartbreak” country genre may seem overdone, he has done an excellent job making it listenable and different from the rest. Just looking at his debut album, “If I Know Me,” this is a reoccurring genre. In his best-known song, “Whiskey Glasses,” Wallen showcases this vulnerability and deep emotion in a similar catchy form.
This theme in his second studio album, “Dangerous: The Double Album,” reoccurs with songs like “Sand In My Boots” and “7 Summers.” However, these songs are not your run-of-the-mill sad songs. Yes, the themes behind them are about “not getting the girl” and are inherently sad, but the beats behind them are catchy, and Wallen’s booming voice makes these songs for any occasion. Whether on the drive to school or working out at the gym, Wallen’s music, including “Love Somebody,” has no limits on when it can be listened to.
Despite his discography featuring his vulnerability as a human with the heartbreak genre, Wallen lays it all on the line in his newest single with lyrics like, “And I’d be lucky if I ever find a somethin’ more than just a crazy night. I just wanna love somebody who ain’t hypnotized by dollar signs and blindin’ lights like they tend to be.”
However, the creative blend in the way Wallen utilizes the guitar and beat switch to these lyrics makes this part “less depressing” in the sense that the song won’t instantly kill your mood. In fact, this part is one of the catchier “pop” elements of the entire song. It’s a strength that Wallen can express his emotions in this form, as this stylistic choice to make his music more accessible means more people will hear the message he is trying to convey.
While I am a big fan of Wallen’s latest song, “Love Somebody,” between his lyricism, beat choices and message, I am only giving this song a 4/5. This is because I have heard better songs from Wallen that I believe go more lyrically in-depth and are less chorus-dependent, although this is a song I could listen to for hours. Not to mention, this is likely, though not confirmed, a prequel to whatever next album Wallen does decide to release.
This is a song you cannot listen to once to give a rating; I found out that as I listened to this song multiple times over different days, my opinion on it changed to now, where I give this song a cool 4/5. I recommend that everyone reading this listen to “Love Somebody” once or twice.
