Rapid Fire: Halloween Hot Takes

If we’re lucky in the Opinion section, we work through our beliefs completely and support them with great arguments. But sometimes, we don’t need a deeper reason to hold our convictions. Rapid Fire is for those tweet-length takes that can be explained in just a sentence or two, without further justification.

Halloween is quickly approaching, and “spooky season” is officially here. Whether you’ll be handing out candy to trick-or-treaters or showing off your Halloween costumes, we want to know what Halloween opinion haunts you most. This week, the opinion section answers the question: What is your Halloween hot take?

Evelyn Pazan, Associate Opinion Editor: Multi-day Halloween enthusiasts will disagree, but I think we need to end the practice of buying a different costume for each night of “Halloweekend”. It’s expensive. College students are broke. And no one is going to remember or care that you were a cat three nights in a row.

Noa Climor, Contributor: I think we need to bring back unhinged Halloween costumes. I love a crazy costume that only a specific crowd will know. I saw someone on social media dressed up as the tennis ball POV from “Challengers”, and I think that this is what Halloween is all about.

Amber Greene, Contributor: A lot of people that jump on the bandwagon of candy corn being disgusting have not given it a fighting chance! Whether you like it or not it is definitely the candy that defines this holiday. I think its color and taste capture the fall-ness of Halloween and it needs to be appreciated more as a good candy, and not just one people love to hate.

Raegan Skelly, Contributor: With Halloween parties come all types of costumes, whether it’s an individual, a duo, a trio, or a big group. I always see people praising big friend group costumes, but on the other hand, the amount of annoyance a couple’s costume seems to bring out from people always shocks me, as I love a couple’s costume. There are just so many options that it’s hard to go wrong. Once you go above the 4-5 range, you’re essentially stuck with being different colored M&M’s. Two is the perfect number for a coordinating Halloween look, but couple-duo costumes specifically still face the most amount of hate (I have yet to see someone get mad over a regular duo costume). My preference for duo costumes may stem from being able to recognize them easier, since there are so mainly mainstream references available. Maybe I just love “love,” but couple’s costumes are underappreciated, and definitely my favorites to see throughout the posts from “Halloweekend!”
