Field Hockey: Huskies headed to Providence for the Big East Tournament

The UConn field hockey team is in Providence this weekend to compete in the Big East conference tournament.

Having just secured the Big East regular season title following a 3-1 win over Old Dominion, the Huskies are also looking to double up and win the conference tournament.

However, winning the tournament will not come easily, as UConn is tasked with a tough opponent, the Liberty Flames, standing between them and the championship game.

UConn hosted Liberty just two weeks ago on Oct. 25 and narrowly escaped, defeating the Flames 2-1 in overtime.

Just recently, the Huskies found themselves with five of the six annual Big East honors and five All-Big East selections.

Freshman Sophie Perschk is the lone husky on the All-Big East Second Team, while fellow freshman Juul Sauer was a unanimous selection alongside junior Sol Simone on the All-Big East First Team. Joining Sauer and Simone on the First Team are sophomore Natalie McKenna and junior Juana Garcia.

Simone was also named the Big East Midfielder of the Year, while McKenna was named Big East Goalkeeper of the Year. Sauer was not only named as the Big East Freshman of the Year, but also the Big East Offensive Player of the Year after her stellar freshman campaign. The Huskies also earned the Big East Coaching Staff of the Year.

As for Liberty, the Flames did not see as much success as the Huskies in the Big East Honors.

Freshman Dara Semmartin was named to the All-Big East second team, along with junior Lou Combrinck and senior Tuti Dell Anna. Graduate student Reagan Underwood was the lone Liberty player named to the All-Big East First Team.

The highly anticipated matchup between Liberty and Connecticut will kick off at 1 p.m., followed by Old Dominion and Temple at 4 p.m. The two winners will face off Sunday, Nov. 10 for a shot at the Big East tournament title.

If the Huskies prevail this weekend and win the tournament, they will most likely return to the national tournament after missing it a season ago and look to win their sixth national championship in program history.
