Career event invites marketing, communications, DMD students to BUSN next Wednesday

University of Connecticut students can attend a career fair-style event next Wednesday, Feb. 26 in the School of Business lounge located on the building’s first floor. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Marketing and Sales Career Day will feature UConn alumni, partners, research firms and Fortune 500 companies to help attendees figure out their career path in marketing and sales, according to the Student Daily Digest.

Emily Laput, a sixth-semester UConn student majoring in marketing and communications, with a concentration in digital marketing and analytics, is the program assistant for the Marketing Department’s Professional Sales Leadership (PSL) program. Laput spoke about how the event can benefit students studying marketing, communications or digital media and design in an email to The Daily Campus.

“Students — especially marketing, communications, and digital media and design (DMD) students — should attend because this is a more intimate event where students can have more meaningful and impactful conversations with the company representatives,” Laput said.

Laput added that this event is unlike the larger university career fairs, which usually involve long lines at tables and limited time for students to spend with company representatives.

UConn has held this event in past semesters, according to Laput. It began with the name Career and Networking Night, and Marketing and Sales Career Day took place in the Spring and Fall 2024 semesters. Laput said that LEGO and Henkel were the most popular tables at last semester’s fair.

This semester, students can expect to meet representatives of companies including CarGurus, CocaCola and IMPACT, a marketing agency, according to Laput. The Connecticut Sun will also be in attendance for students interested in sports marketing, and Madison Square Garden Sports for those interested in sports and entertainment.

Laput also mentioned that a handout will be available to students who wish to practice their networking skills and learn more about career opportunities at specific companies.

“We also have a company handout with information about the companies, what they’re recruiting for, links to their career pages, and who’ll be representing so that students can prepare in advance,” Laput said. “Students can use this to practice their networking skills, gain industry insights from professionals, and learn about career opportunities at their target companies.”

Laput expressed gratitude toward the commitment of many companies and alumni to help and connect with UConn students at these events.

“We have many companies returning for the Spring Marketing and Sales Career Day. That’s one thing I am grateful for: the strong relationships we have with these companies and their commitment to helping UConn students,” Laput said. “It’s very heartwarming. Many alumni are eager to give back and come to the career days as well as other events to connect with students.”

Those interested in attending can register for the event via the Nexus website, where they can also find the company handout. Laput recommended that students bring copies of their resume with them in case any representatives ask for one. Students can dress professionally if they would like, though they are not required to do so, according to Laput.
