Women’s Tennis: Huskies continue their winning streak, sweeping SHU 7-0

The UConn Women’s Tennis team are proving to be quite the group to beat, defeating fellow in-state school Sacred Heart University with a score of 7-0.

Entering this matchup, the Huskies were coming off a 6-1 victory over Quinnipiac, where they improved their record this season to 5-1. However, the Pioneers have had a different outcome, as their season has not been off to a strong start. Sacred Heart has only played three games this season and held a 1-2 record entering the match.

UConn has had previous success in their doubles matches, especially with the pairing of seniors Olivia Wright and Maria Constantinou, and this match was no different. Wright and Constantinou absolutely dominated against senior Ania Garriga and freshman Ola Irla Bartyzel winning their match 6-3. The duo of senior Isabel Petri Bere and sophomore Victoria Matos also won their match defeating the Pioneers duo of sophomore Malena del Olmo and senior Olivia Kharkover 6-2. The Huskies closed out the doubles matches with yet another win as sophomore Isabella Asenov and freshman Chloe Lomans defeated freshmen Olivia Zuba and Kiah James 6-2.

The Huskies took control early on in the singles matches with Wright dominating against Bartyzel, winning both matches 6-1. Wright’s fellow teammate Constantinou defeated her opponent, senior Aina Garriga, in both matches as well with a score of 6-2 each time.

Petri Bere for the Huskies won her first singles match against Kharkover 6-3, but fell to her in the second one with a score of 6-2. Petri Bere had a standout comeback though in the third set defeating Kharkover 10-3.

Sophomores Caroline Hinshaw, Victoria Matos, and junior Cameron Didion of UConn all one their singles matches against the Pioneers leading the Huskies to a 7-0 overall victory.

This match was certainly a huge win for the Huskies as they continued to perform well in their doubles matches and have certainly improved in their singles from the beginning of the year.

Looking ahead, the Huskies will travel to South Dakota to face off against South Dakota University who currently hold a 3-3 overall record. The matchup is set for Feb. 28 at 12 p.m.

The Huskies will need to bring their A-game, as the next day they find themselves in a Big East matchup. On Saturday Mar. 1, the Huskies will hit the road again, traveling to Nebraska to face off against Creighton. Both matchups will be crucial for the Huskies, as they will look to keep their winning streak alive and hopefully improve their Big East record to 3-0.
