Show Scanner: Where to catch live music 3/14-3/15

We’ve finally made it to spring break, Huskies! It’s been a long, busy and stressful stretch as students at the University of Connecticut have raced to the finish line, burning the midnight oil to study for midterms and finish up those papers that we all know and love. Getting through this grind is a great reason to celebrate, and what better way to do so than jumping into a mosh pit?

Though many students are either spending this weekend sleeping or flying to warmer climates, there are still plenty of great shows happening. Here’s a look at where to catch live music this weekend in Storrs and across Connecticut — and maybe another out-of-state show too. #

Friday 3/14: The Dog P0und “Boiler Room” — Storrs

For UConn students who aren’t leaving until Saturday, head over to The Dog P0und’s “Boiler Room” show on Friday, March 14. Unlike recent shows, this night will be an EDM-focused night, with four DJs providing a mix of house, techno and dance sounds for showgoers to groove to. The lineup features DJ 1208, DJ Meow, DJ SD-129 and DJ Skeptrix.

Music starts at 9 p.m. and runs until 2 a.m. Admission is $7 and no parking is available on site. For the address, message @thedogp0und on Instagram.

Friday 3/14: The Shop — Hamden

The Shop, a DIY analog recording studio and venue based in Hamden, Conn., is hosting a show with a dynamite lineup on Friday, March 14. The show is highlighted by Death Valley Sun Troopers, one of the most exciting bands on the Connecticut circuit, and Mildly Allergic, who has made several appearances in Storrs. Rounding out the bill is Sundots and Moss Boy & The Critters.

If you’re from Hamden and the New Haven area, you’re not going to want to miss this exciting show. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., music starts at 7:30 p.m. and admission is $7. For the address, message @theshop.ct on Instagram.

Saturday 3/15: Crunch House — West Haven

There’s no better way to spend a Saturday night than dancing and moshing at Crunch House in West Haven, especially when there’s a great lineup like the one that’s happening on Saturday, March 15. The four-band lineup features Sailboat, the hardcore/screamo band from Storrs that recently released their debut EP “Shanties.”

Also on the bill is Film & Gender, the two-piece punk duo with one of the most consistent show schedules of any band in the Nutmeg State. Rounding out the lineup are the bands Blandest and Target Scammers. Doors open at 7 p.m., music starts at 7:30 p.m. and admission is $10. For the address, message @crunchhouseofficial on Instagram for the address.

Saturday 3/15: Ruby Leftstep @ Mercury Lounge — New York City

Wait, when did New York City become part of Connecticut? That’s right folks, I’m including a show from outside of Connecticut for the first time. Though it breaks the point of this beat, this one was too special not to include. Ruby Leftstep, one of the most popular bands in the Connecticut scene, is heading to the Big Apple to open for Australian alternative rock band The Rubens at the legendary Mercury Lounge.

Tickets can be purchased on Ticketmaster for $21.25 and attendees must be 16 or older to attend. If you’re a UConn student from New York and back at home, go out and support a Connecticut band on Saturday!
