The UConn women’s lacrosse team will close out their regular season with their final home game on Saturday, April 26, against the Georgetown Hoyas. This game will be a must-win game for the Huskies, as a spot to the Big East Tournament in Philadelphia is on the line.

Connecticut comes into this matchup with much needed momentum, after they beat Xavier 24-8 last week, to set a new single-game goal record in the program. The Huskies currently stand with a 3-2 conference record and a 6-1 home record.

This will be the 20th time the program will come face to face, with the Hoyas holding an 11-8 record over the Huskies. However, UConn has had big wins against the Hoyas in the past including a 13-11 win in the Big East Tournament semifinal last season.

Unlike the Huskies, Georgetown comes into the match with a secured spot in the Big East Tournament. As they stand third in the conference behind Denver and Villanova. Despite that, they will still be looking to finish their regular season on a high and take another win home.

The Hoyas come into the match with a 4-1 conference record, having only won two out of their five away games.

They will bring a strong offensive front with freshman Sophia Loschest, who was just named Big East Freshman of the Week for the second week this season. Loschest is also second in the team when it comes to goals scored, scoring 29 goals in her first season. Another player the Huskies will need to look for on the Hoyas is junior Gracie Driggs who leads the team with 45 goals and 105 draw controls, the third most in a season in program history.

However, their offense is not the only thing the Huskies will have to look out for as Georgetown also brings a strong defensive end. Junior defender Kendall Steer was named Big East Defensive Player of the Week after causing three turnovers, three ground balls and an assist in the Hoya’s last match against Marquette. Freshman Christina King has also proven herself critical to this defensive end,  leading the team with 16 caused turnovers.

Another important piece of the puzzle is Senior goalie Leah Warehime. She’s accumulated 109 saves throughout the season and has a .402 save percentage.

The match will be important for the Huskies, not only because of what’s at stake for the program but also because they will be honoring their eight seniors as they take the field for their last home game.

Connecticut will hope to continue their newfound momentum and end their regular season on a high, winning their final game and securing a spot for the Big East Tournament.

This matchup will take place at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. The faceoff is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, and Husky fans can tune into the match on FloSports.
