The UConn women’s lacrosse team (11-5, 4-2) wrapped up the regular season by earning a critical victory over Georgetown University (9-7, 4-2) in a must-win situation to punch their ticket to the Big East tournament. The Huskies thrived under pressure to deliver one of their most complete performances all season. It was also Senior Day at Morrone Stadium, making the afternoon even more special as the program honored its eight seniors before the opening draw.
The Huskies set the tone early with strong defense as grad student goalkeeper Tori Cini came up with three saves to open the game, denying Georgetown from finding early momentum. UConn got on the board first with sophomore Emma Dacey finding the net on a crafty backhand shot. Junior Karsyn Burnash capitalized on a woman-up advantage late in the quarter to extend the lead to 2-0. The Hoyas struggled to generate quality chances before the horn as the Connecticut defense held strong, holding onto a two-goal lead to end the first quarter.
The second quarter shaped up to be a defensive battle, with both teams going nearly 10 minutes without a score as the goaltending tightened up on both ends. Cini erased an open opportunity for Georgetown with a spectacular point-blank save to keep the Hoyas scoreless. The stalemate was finally broken when senior Eliza Bowman twisted past defenders to net the Huskies’ third goal of the game. Georgetown quickly answered with their first score of the afternoon, but this didn’t shake UConn’s mentality. Redshirt sophomore Ava Plata responded moments later to restore the lead. A second Hoyas goal at 1:38 was met with yet another immediate answer, this time by grad student Jenna Giardina. The Huskies maintained control and a 5-2 advantage heading into the half.
Georgetown cut into the lead early into the second half, but UConn showed resilience all afternoon. Giardina sparked the offense with her second goal, quickly followed by one from redshirt junior Rayea Davis, kickstarting a dominant third quarter for Connecticut. The Huskies shifted into another gear, rattling off seven unanswered to blow the game open. Dacey scored the highlight goal of the match on an improbable behind-the-back shot to make it 10-3. Davis and Plata also netted their second goals of the afternoon during this run as UConn’s offense proved too much to handle. Cini continued to stop the Hoyas attack throughout the quarter, adding three more saves to her total. By the end of the third quarter, UConn built a dominant 12-3 lead, fully in control as Georgetown struggled to find answers.
The Hoyas refused to go down without a fight to start the fourth frame, however, scoring six of the next seven goals in an impressive run to bring the Huskies lead down to four. The Huskies regrouped, though, and Burnash stopped Georgetown right in their tracks with two late goals to halt any comeback hopes, completing a hat trick and sealing a 15-9 UConn victory.
An impressive all-around performance powered the Huskies to a crucial win, securing their spot in the Big East Tournament as the No. 3 seed. UConn’s explosive offense and strong defensive stands overwhelmed the Hoyas, who dropped to fourth in the standings to round out the tournament bracket. The Huskies now shift their attention to next week’s semifinal matchup with Villanova, hoping to carry this dominant showing into postseason play.
