The UConn Men’s Soccer team took down Brown University Wednesday night with a final score of 3-1.
UConn entered the matchup on a three-game winning streak and a 4-0-2 record, whereas Brown was coming off their one loss so far of the season (2-1). The two last faced off against each other back in 2010 where Brown beat the Huskies in a penalty shootout. Despite the decade long drought since their last face-off, UConn entered the game determined to keep their winning streak alive and they did just that.
The Huskies kicked off scoring just ten minutes into the first half thanks to senior forward Charlie Holmes. He netted a goal past Brown goalie senior Henrik Weiper to put the Huskies on the board. Nearly four minutes later, midfielder senior Nicolas Tomerius netted a goal of his own giving UConn a 2-0 lead.
UConn continued to dominate the scoreboard in the first half as senior forward Austin Brummett netted his sixth goal of the season. The San Diego State transfer is a key player for the Huskies and his performance against Brown was no different. In UConn’s previous game against Colgate. Brummett contributed two out of the three goals of the game to help secure a victory for the Huskies.
Goalkeeper Kyle Durham protected the net for UConn, stopping several goal scoring attempts made by Brown throughout the first half.
At about 30 minutes into the first half, junior Max Gummesson was subbed out by his teammate junior Johan Hamel following a collision on the field but returned later in the second half. Gummesson is a strong midfielder for the Huskies, often offering scoring attempts for his teammates so it was a relief for UConn fans to see him back on the field to start the second half.
Freshman Timi Browne scored his first career goal for Brown with an assist from Lorenzo Amaral to put the Bears on the board and end the first half with a score of 3-1.
A scoreless second half on both ends ended the game with a final score of 3-1, with UConn improving to (5-0-2) and Brown extending their losing streak to two losses.
Looking ahead, the Huskies are set to take on Harvard University at home. The game will take place on Saturday, Sept.13 at 6 p.m. at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. The game will also be streamed on UConn+.
