Volleyball: Huskies return home seeking redemption after difficult opening Big East weekend

UConn volleyball returns home seeking redemption after being swept on the road. The Huskies opened Big East play last weekend with two big losses to DePaul and Marquette. UConn returns home to Storrs hoping to turn their conference play around as they take on the Seton Hall Pirates and the St. John’s Red Storm.

The Huskies hold an 11-3 overall record and despite their struggles last weekend, they remain undefeated at home, winning their last seven matches in Storrs.

Despite their recent struggles, UConn has a strong roster of players. Senior Emma Werkmeister, who leads the program with 191 kills and 29 service aces, is also second in the Big East in kills, averaging 4.57 kills per set.

This weekend, Huskies will host Seton Hall on Friday, Oct. 3. UConn holds a 9-7 record against the Pirates, with seven of those wins being at home.

Seton Hall’s conference play got off to a rough start as they were swept last weekend. The Pirates lost their match to Georgetown, 1-3, and were swept by Villanova. The Pirates hold a 6-7 overall record.

Despite their struggles, the Pirates still have a strong group, including freshman Sadie Reich. Reich scored 18 kills in the Pirate’s game against Georgetown, and she leads the team with 175 kills this season. Another key player is senior Asli Subasili, who has proven herself essential in both the offensive and defensive end. Subasili leads the team with 16 service aces and 53 blocks.

UConn will close out the weekend against St. John’s on Saturday, Oct. 4. This is not an unfamiliar match up for the Huskies as the programs have faced 22 times before. The teams come into this contest evenly matched, standing with an 11-11 record.

The Red Storm has struggled this season, opening the year with a six-game losing streak and falling in conference play to both Villanova and Georgetown. The program currently holds a 4-11 overall record and a 0-3 away record.

An essential player for the Red Storm is senior Erin Jones who leads the team with 177 kills and 22 service aces. Jones is also second in assists (168) and digs (137). Jones ranks fourth in the Big East in kills, averaging four kills per set.

The Huskies will be hoping to turn their conference run around and win these two matches to remain undefeated at home.

UConn will start the weekend facing Seton Hall at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, and then will take on St. John’s on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 4 p.m. Both matches will take place at the UConn Volleyball Center in Storrs and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
