The Honor Roll: Texas and Penn State fall out of ranking after embarrassing losses

On Saturday, we saw the downfall of AP preseason Nos. 1 and 2: Texas and Penn State. Last week, both teams were in my top 10, but now they are nowhere to be found in my top 25 this week.  

Ohio State (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) remains No. 1 after a dominant 42-3 win over Minnesota. The Buckeyes will battle No. 13 Illinois (5-1, 2-1 Big Ten) for the Illibuck on Saturday at noon on FOX.  

Miami (Fla.) moved up to No. 2 after defeating rival Florida State on the road, 28-22. The Hurricanes move into their bye week and will host Louisville (4-1, 1-1 ACC) for the Schellenberger Trophy on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.

Oregon (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) dropped to No. 3 solely because they were on the bye week. College GameDay will come to Eugene as the Ducks host No. 8 Indiana (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on CBS.  

Ole Miss (5-0, 3-0 SEC) remained at No. 4 despite having the week off. The Rebels host Washington State (3-2) on Saturday at 12:45 p.m. on SEC Network.  

Texas A&M (5-0, 2-0 SEC) stayed at No. 5 after a strong defensive effort in a 31-9 win over Mississippi State. The Aggies will host Florida (2-3, 1-1 SEC) on Saturday at 7 p.m. on ESPN.  

Oklahoma (5-0, 1-0 SEC) moved up to No. 6 following a 44-0 rout over Kent State. The Sooners will take on Texas (3-2) in the Allstate Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on ABC.  

Alabama (4-1, 2-0 SEC) jumped to No. 7 after a 30-14 win over Vanderbilt while hosting College GameDay. The Crimson Tide have a huge test at No. 17 Missouri (5-0, 1-0 SEC) on Saturday at noon on ABC.  

Indiana (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) is now No. 8 despite having the week off. The Hoosiers will put their undefeated record on the line at No. 3 Oregon (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on CBS.  

Georgia (4-1, 2-1 SEC) snuck back into the top 10 at No. 9 after a bounce-back 35-14 win over Kentucky on Saturday. The Bulldogs visit Auburn (3-2, 0-2 SEC) in Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on ABC.  

Texas Tech (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) entered the top 10 at No. 10 following a 35-11 win at rival Houston, ending the Cougars’ undefeated hopes. The Red Raiders host Kansas (4-2, 2-1 Big 12) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on FOX.  

LSU (4-1, 1-1 SEC) moved up to No. 11 despite being on its bye week. The Tigers host South Carolina (3-2, 1-2 SEC) on Saturday at 7:45 p.m. on SEC Network.  

Michigan (4-1, 2-0 Big Ten) jumped up to No. 12 with a 24-10 win over Wisconsin. The Wolverines visit USC (4-1, 2-1 Big Ten) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on NBC.  

Illinois (5-1, 2-1) slid up to No. 13 after quarterback Luke Altmyer’s career-high 390 yards helped the Fighting Illini beat Purdue for the Purdue Cannon, 43-27. They battle No. 1 Ohio State (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) for the Illibuck on Saturday at noon on FOX.  

Tennessee (4-1, 1-1 SEC) went up to No. 14 even though it had the week off. The Volunteers host Arkansas (2-3, 0-1 SEC) on Saturday at 4:15 p.m. on SEC Network.  

Georgia Tech (5-0, 2-0 ACC) moved up to No. 15 despite being on its bye week. The Yellow Jackets host Virginia Tech (2-4, 1-1 ACC) in the TechMo Bowl rivalry game on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on ACC Network.

BYU (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) rose to No. 16 after quarterback Bear Bachmeier threw for a career-high 351 yards to beat West Virginia, 38-24, late Friday night. The Cougars visit Arizona (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) on Saturday at 8 p.m. on ESPN2.  

Missouri (5-0, 1-0 SEC) comes in at No. 17 coming off the bye week. The Tigers put their undefeated record on the line against No. 7 Alabama (4-1, 2-0 SEC) on Saturday at noon on ABC.  

Virginia (5-1, 3-0 ACC) moved up to No. 18 but nearly fell out of the ranking as it took overtime to beat Louisville, 30-27. The Cavaliers have the week off, but host Washington State (3-2) on Oct. 18 at 6:30 p.m. on The CW.  

Arizona State (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) comes out of its bye week at No. 19. The Sun Devils visit Utah (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) on Saturday at 10:15 p.m. on ESPN.  

Memphis (6-0, 2-0 American) makes its Honor Roll debut at No. 20 after becoming the first team to be bowl eligible, defeating Tulsa 45-7. The Tigers can celebrate for the next week before visiting UAB (2-3, 0-2 American) in the Battle for the Bones on Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. on ESPN2.  

South Florida (4-1, 1-0 American) stood still at No. 21 after starting conference play with a 54-26 win over Charlotte. The Bulls visit North Texas (5-0, 1-0 American) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN2.  

Florida State (3-2, 0-2 ACC) plummeted to No. 22 after a 28-22 home loss to rival Miami (Fla.). The Seminoles hope for their first ACC win of the season as they host Pittsburgh (3-2, 1-1 ACC) on Saturday at noon on ESPN.  

Vanderbilt (5-1, 1-1 SEC) fell to No. 23 following a 30-14 road loss to Alabama on the national stage. The Commodores are on their bye week, but will host No. 11 LSU (4-1, 1-1 SEC) on Oct. 18 at either noon on ABC or 12:45 p.m. on SEC Network (will be determined on Sunday).  

Cincinnati (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) enters the Honor Roll at No. 24 after a 38-30 win over Iowa State. The Bearcats host rival UCF (3-2, 0-2 Big 12) on Saturday at noon on FS1.  

Iowa State (5-1, 2-1 Big 12) rounds out the ranking at No. 25 after a 38-30 loss at Cincinnati. The Cyclones look to bounce back at Colorado (2-4, 0-3 Big 12) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN.
