Women’s Basketball: No. 1 UConn to kickoff Big East road trip against Georgetown

After vanquishing the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Monday night 85-47, the top-ranked UConn women’s basketball team (19-0, 9-0) is set to begin a conference road trip, starting against the Georgetown Hoyas (11-7, 4-5) Thursday evening.

This marks graduate guard Azzi Fudd’s, a native of Arlington, Va., last homecoming game ever in her UConn career.

“I’m super excited, obviously, to be able to play at home.” Fudd said to the media postgame on Monday. “I don’t really know who’s coming. I’m assuming lots of people will be there, so it’s always fun.”

Fudd, alongside her teammates, Sarah Strong, KK Arnold, Serah Williams and Ashlynn Shade all reached double digits in the points column Monday night. With a double-double on the game (18 points, 11 rebounds) Strong became the third fastest Husky in program history to reach 1,000 career points.

Despite a rough stretch to the first half, Strong and the Huskies rallied in the third and fourth quarters to fully accomplish the win.

“I think that’s something that is super unique about our team, is that you really can’t take one thing away from us,” Fudd said to the media postgame, “Our team is just so versatile.”

As far as this upcoming conference bout against the Hoyas, the Huskies should look out for junior guard Khia Miller, who averages 11.4 points per game.

To continue staying undefeated in their conference, the Huskies should take advantage of the Hoyas consistency in turning over the ball.

Over 18 games the Hoyas have played so far this season, they have racked up a total of 296 turnovers.

Players like KK Arnold, or as fans have deemed her, the masked menace, will be integral for the Huskies to utilize defensively.

“I thought this is the best game that she’s played since she’s been at Connecticut.” Head coach of the program Geno Auriemma said to the media Monday, “I think it’s a mentality. She’s [Arnold] one of the top guards in America, so you gotta go out there with a certain mindset, and then the whole team has to have that mindset.”

The last time these two conference foes faced one another was on Jan. 11, 2025. The Huskies took the win 73-55, where Fudd racked up a total of 21 points. Dating back to 1988, the Huskies lead the series 52-2 and have won 40 consecutive games against Georgetown.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from CareFirst Arena in Washington, D.C. Husky fans can tune in to the game on TNT or TruTV.
