UConn Women’s Tennis: The Huskies head down to DC to face Georgetown

The University of Connecticut women’s tennis team is heading down to Washington, D.C. to face the Georgetown Hoyas on Thursday. Then, they will take on the Villanova Wildcats in Pennsylvania on Saturday. 

The Huskies faced Marquette and Providence last weekend when they swept both teams 7-0. 

Senior Cameron Didion, juniors Ela Platenikova, Victoria Matos and Isabella Asenov, sophomore Chloe Lomans and freshman Madison Mcleod all won their singles matches versus Marquette. Matos and Mcleod plus Asenov and Didion won their doubles matches as well. 

Against Providence, Platenikova and Lomans plus Asenov and Didion won their doubles matches while Platenikova, Lomans, Matos, Didion, Mcleod and Asenov all won their singles matches. 

In singles play, Asenov, Didion and Lomans all lead the team with nine wins while only allowing four losses. In doubles play, Matos and Platenikova lead with six wins, although Lomans and Mcleod are 5-0 and Matos and Mcleod are 3-0 this season. 

UConn is now 9-6 overall and 3-2 in Big East play. 

The Hoyas come into this matchup with a record of 5-8 overall and a 2-2 record in Big East play. 

Georgetown is currently on a one-match win streak after beating Saint Josephs 7-0 on Sunday. However, 2-1 in their last three matches, beating Seton Hall on Friday before losing to Saint John’s on Saturday. 

 Junior Katie Garofolo-Ro was named the BIG EAST Women’s Player of the Week on Monday after she went perfect in singles sets 3-0. 

Villanova enters the matchup 10-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play. 

Last weekend, the Wildcats beat Rider University 6-1 on Thursday but fell to the Temple Owls 3-4 on Sunday. 

Senior Maggie Gehrig is one of two players on Villanova with a positive win-loss record, winning seven matches while losing five. 

Freshman Alina Kornyeva is the other player with a positive win-loss record with five wins and four losses. 

In terms of doubles play, every player has a negative win-loss record, but senior Emi Callahan and Gehrig have a better win percentage, winning six doubles matches while losing seven. 

The Huskies have an overall record of 3-6 vs the Hoyas, with matches dating back to March 21, 2009.  

UConn has an overall record of 11-4 against Villanova, with matches dating back to April 11, 2009. In their last matchup on April 19, 2025, Villanova beat UConn 4-3. 

UConn will play Georgetown on April 2 at 9 a.m. and Villanova on April 4 at 10 a.m.
