After 130 races in the NASCAR Cup Series, Ty Gibbs won his first at Bristol Motor Speedway this past weekend.
Gibbs, who is the grandson of legendary NFL head coach and owner of his own racing company, Joe Gibbs, outlasted two restarts at the end of the race to take home the win for JGR.
Gibbs has been the least successful driver at JGR over his Cup Series career, finishing eighteenth, fifteenth and nineteenth the past three years, while his teammates have shared a lot of success in the NASCAR playoffs.

Compared to his teammates, fans have put Gibbs under a lot of scrutiny throughout his time at JGR. This season, though, Gibbs is putting his doubters on notice.
Gibbs’ best season in the Cup Series prior to 2026 was in 2024, where he achieved eight top-five finishes, 12 top-10 finishes and two pole positions. Across that season, he also led 417 laps, but his average finish was six spots lower than where he started.
This season, Gibbs has been on a tear.
After the first eight races of the season, Gibbs sits fourth in the points standings, with 281 points. During this eight-race span, he achieved his first win, five top-fives and six top-10’s with 43 laps led.
The only JGR teammate ahead of him in the standings right now is last season’s runner-up, Denny Hamlin, who sits in third with 300 points.
Gibbs also only sits 105 points off of Tyler Reddick in the lead.
Gibbs’ five top-fives come from the Circuit of the Americas, Phoenix Raceway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Martinsville and Bristol. Gibbs came close to another top five in Darlington but ended up finishing sixth.
For some, Gibbs driving so well may come as a surprise, but for the people who watched him in the then Xfinity Series, this was a long time coming.
In 2022, Ty Gibbs torched the NASCAR Xfinity Series for his first championship in the top three series of NASCAR after notching seven wins, 16 top-five finishes, 23 top-10 finishes, seven poles and 990 laps lead.
That season led to Gibbs getting a seat at JGR in 2023, where he’s since floundered a bit.
But this season is looking special for the 23-year-old.
The thing is, Gibbs has shown flashes throughout his Cup career that he could achieve something like he is now.
Street and road courses are where Gibbs shines the most. Since becoming full-time in the Cup Series in 2023, Gibbs has finished top-five in a third of the street and road courses he has raced at. Two of his most successful tracks are the Circuit of Americas in Austin, Texas, and the Chicago Street Course in Chicago, Illinois, where he has notched two top-fives each.
Gibbs has been excellent this season with the way he’s been driving.
Is this finally his breakout season? Can he continue this good form?
Gibbs has the talent to do so, and with the win in Bristol, he is putting not just his doubters on notice, but the entire NASCAR field as well.
