A chemically hazardous situation arose at the Torrey Life Sciences Building on the University of Connecticut’s Storrs campus on Wednesday night.
Around 8:30 p.m. students were warned of the situation via the UConnALERT system, which instructed students to avoid the area. The situation also closed North Eagleville Road between North and Northwest residence halls, and students were asked to avoid the Biology-Physics Building next door, as parts of the area were also affected.
Students received a later alert around 9:50 p.m. saying the situation was mitigated by University Safety and Facilities Operations and the area was safe.
In an emailed statement to The Daily Campus, UConn spokesman Michael Enright said students should not worry about residual danger from the situation, such as chemicals still in the air. He said the closing of roads and buildings was “to allow for emergency vehicle access and an abundance of caution.”
The university did not comment on how the hazardous situation began or what chemicals were released.
