The Weekly Power Play: Not so sunny start to the season for Florida Panthers

The Florida Panthers entered the 2026-27 season looking to become Stanley Cup contenders once again after missing the playoffs last year and being back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2024 and 2025. However, their pursuit of a playoff run is already in jeopardy with a growing list of injuries.

Florida has been forced to navigate this season so far with the absence of key players, including captain Aleksander Barkov and veteran forward Brad Marchand. With injuries affecting many areas of the lineup, the Panthers have faced an early test in their ability to remain a competitive team while managing the loss of the key players on the ice.

Barkov’s injury is particularly concerning given the circumstances surrounding his season debut. The 31-year-old center missed the entire 2025-26 season after suffering a knee injury during training camp. He had reconstructive surgery on his right knee and after months of rehabilitation, Barkov returned for Florida’s season opener against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sept. 29.

His return to the ice was short-lived. Barkov sustained a lower-body injury during Florida’s Oct. 1 matchup against the San Jose Sharks, leaving the game in the second period. Shortly after, the organization placed their captain on long-term injured reserve, and the team announced that he is expected to miss six to eight weeks.

“I have a good team of doctors and physical therapists behind me,” Barkov said in an interview with NHL.com. “They are going to take good care of me, so, knowing that, I am pretty calm and very confident in coming back stronger.”

The loss of Barkov represents a setback for Florida who expected its captain back and well for the entirety of the season. During the 2024-25 season, he recorded 71 points, including 20 goals and 51 assists, in 67 games.

Barkov is also a three-time Frank J. Selke trophy winner, including consecutive seasons in 2023-24 and 2024-25, recognizing him as the NHL’s best defensive forward.

Marchand’s injury has also added another complication for the Panthers. The veteran winger began the season recovering from offseason procedures related to hip and hernia issues. He missed Florida’s first two-game of the season before making his debut against the Anaheim Ducks on Oct 5. Marchand also netted a goal in his return to the ice this season.

That momentum, however, did not last. On Oct. 7, Marchand suffered another lower-body injury during Florida’s 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings. After taking a stick to the face, an awkward movement of his body caused his right skate to hit the goalpost. He was helped off the ice and did not return for the remainder of the game.

Head coach Paul Maurice later announced that Marchand would miss approximately six weeks following three weeks of recovery and three weeks of rehabilitation.

Marchand’s statistics from last season speak for themselves as to why his absence on the ice will be noticeable. In 52 games during the 2025-26 season, he recorded 54 points, including 27 goals and 27 assists. Despite also missing time last season due to injury, he remained one of Florida’s key offensive players.

His postseason performance in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs showed his value during the Panthers’ championship run. Marchand recorded 20 points, with 10 goals and 10 assists, across 23 games. He scored six goals in the Stanley Cup Final series against the Edmonton Oilers, helping Florida secure its second consecutive championship.

The Florida Panthers currently sit in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with a record of 3-2-2.  On Tuesday, they defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets with a final score of 7-3.

New to the team, left-winger Brady Tkachuk earned himself a hat trick, scoring three of the seven goals with brother Matthew recording five assists throughout the night.

Prior to the win, the Panthers were on a two-game losing streak after falling to the Buffalo Sabres 5-3 on Oct. 12 and the Minnesota Wild 4-1 on Oct. 10. The Panthers will look to build on their most recent win despite being without two of their top players.

Up next, the Panthers take on the Seattle Kraken on Saturday with puck drop scheduled for 6 p.m.
