Women’s Soccer: Huskies held scoreless in second-straight loss

The UConn women’s soccer team (3-4-7, 1-2-3 Big East) suffered their second-straight shutout Wednesday night, losing 2-0 to Creighton (6-6-3, 2-3-2 Big East) on the road.

Creighton broke through 30:20 into the match on a long score from junior forward Anna Bragg. Evading pressure from UConn junior defender Olivia Beauvois, Bragg sent a rocket from outside the box that one-hopped the net.

UConn goalkeeper Ava Yamas made a diving attempt at the ball, but the shot bounced just short and over her outstretched arms for Creighton’s first score of the contest.

The goal was Bragg’s second of the season and first in over a month, tying her for third on the Bluejays in goals.

Creighton’s leading scorer, senior midfielder Olivia Duray, put the game out of reach in the 63rd minute.

After a pair of short passes from freshman midfielder Cassidy Horton and sophomore defender Taylor Yablonski set the ball up near the middle of the field toward the top of the box, Duray sent her fifth goal of the season just over Yamas’ fingertips and off the left side of the goal to put the Bluejays ahead by two.

Both Horton and Yablonski were credited with assists, giving the former her second collegiate point and the latter a team-high three assists. Horton also assisted on Bragg’s score, giving the rookie her first career point and a career evening.

One game after surrendering four goals and being pulled from the contest in a 5-0 loss to Xavier, junior goalkeeper Morgan Paley rebounded with a season-high nine saves in a perfect performance, one which will likely help garner her some consideration for Big East Goalkeeper of the Week.

Yamas made just one save as the Bluejays were limited to three shots on goal.

The Huskies took 18 shots, with half being placed on goal. Despite taking 11 more shots than the Bluejays, the Huskies’ scoring struggles continued.

Junior forward Se-Hanna Mars led the Huskies in both shots and shots on goal.

The victory was a continuation of Creighton’s season-long success at home, as the Bluejays move to 5-2-1 on the year at Morrison Stadium.

With the loss, their second straight, the Huskies dip below .500 both on the season and in Big East play. UConn has now been shut out eight times in the season and four times in Big East play.

UConn has yet to win on the road, holding a 0-3-4 record away from home.

The Huskies will look to reverse those misfortunes and get back to .500 on Saturday, as they will stay in the Midwest to visit Marquette (7-2-6, 3-1-2 Big East).

Kick off at Valley Fields in Milwaukee is scheduled for 2 p.m. The contest will stream live on ESPN+.
