Hi Huskies!

First and most importantly, I’d like to welcome the class of 2030 to campus! My name is Sam, and I’m the editor-in-chief of the University of Connecticut’s editorially independent, student-run newspaper: The Daily Campus.

For all the freshmen reading this, I’m happy to say that you made an excellent choice in college. For all its ups and downs, there’s no place I’d rather spend these four years of my life. Between the Gampel games, beating Duke, trips to the Dairy Bar, stargazing on Horsebarn Hill and finding a place of belonging in your new favorite club, there’s a lot going on that you now get to take part in.

Speaking of which, if you’re in the market for a new group of friends and a new passion, I can’t recommend The Daily Campus highly enough. While I made my first college friends in the UConn Marching Band, I found a sense of purpose within UConn’s student paper. From packed Sunday meetings to last-minute Thursday production deadlines, I can say with confidence that there isn’t a space on campus with as much passion, community and heart behind it.

The Daily Campus has space for everyone, with roles in writing, design, photography, art, website management, social media and more. Over our 130 years of printing, we’ve weathered almost every kind of storm a student newspaper can face, and we’ve reported stories through it all.

Throughout your time in college, I also recommend reading the paper when you have the time. As I said before, there’s a lot going on here at Storrs, and it’ll pass you by if you don’t pay attention. We’ve reported some of the biggest stories this campus has seen, and if you’re willing to take the time to write a story, you might just become part of it.

So, I’d suggest you keep your Sunday nights free if you can — the lights of 1266 Storrs Road will be on, and the door will always be open for you.
