For the second year in a row, the No. 15 UConn Huskies women’s soccer team (14-2-0) found themselves in an overtime American Conference game with Tulsa.
Last season’s regular season matchup ended in a 2-2 tie, this year UConn was able to get the goal they need.
The Huskies defeated Tulsa 2-1 on Sunday after a goal by senior Samantha McGuire in the 105th minute lifted them to victory.
The goal, which came during the second overtime period, was McGuire’s fifth goal of the season and her second game winner.
With the victory, UConn has improved to 6-1 in the American. After losing their first conference game of the season the Huskies have now won six straight games. UConn currently sits in second place, trailing just USF, the team their lone loss came to.
On Sunday, Tulsa was able to strike first in the 23rd minute. Sophomore midfielder Tana Dake scored her third goal of the season to give Tulsa the early 1-0 lead.
The Huskies were unable to respond to the goal in the first half despite having a 7-5 shot advantage heading into the break.
In the 48th minute UConn was able to equalize when redshirt senior Andrea Plucenik scored from six yards out to tie things at 1-1. The goal was Plucenik’s fourth of the season.
The UConn offense kept the pressure on in the second half, as they were able to generate a couple of other scoring chances before overtime.
In the final minute of regulation, UConn’s Stephanie Ribeiro had a shot saved by Tulsa goalkeeper Courtney McKeon. Just seconds later a last ditch effort from UConn’s Heidi Druehl went over the crossbar just before time expired.
Although the Huskies outshot Tulsa in the second half 10-3, McKeon was able to hold the Huskies to just the one goal. McKeon finished the game with six saves. Emily Armstrong also had six saves in what was another strong performance for the Huskies.
The Huskies have now completed the road portion of their schedule and will be in action again on Thursday when they host Houston.
