This weekend the UConn women’s field hockey team clinched the 2015 Big East regular season title.
This is the third straight year the Huskies have taken the Big East title. UConn earned the title Friday night at Providence College, with their 8-0 victory over the Friars.
The Huskies continued their win streak Sunday afternoon at home against Princeton University, who they beat 4-1. Sunday’s win brings the Huskies to 17-0 in regular season, and 4-0 in the Big East.
Overall, UConn has won 14 Big East Regular Season Titles, and has finished 8 undefeated regular seasons.
The Huskies won the title last season in their final regular season game against Temple University, who they took the edge over in a 4-3 finish. At the time, freshman Charlotte Veitner had a pair of goals in the final five minutes to lead UConn to the win and to claim the title. UConn continued into the post season to win the Big East Championship title, as well as the NCAA Championship for the second season in a row. In 2013, the Huskies took a share of the regular season title, and went on to win both the Big East Championship and their first NCAA Championship title since 1985.
UConn has outshot their opponents 374-83 this season. Princeton’s sole goal from Sunday was the first goal given up by the Huskies since Sept. 25th.
UConn has been ranked 2nd by the NCAA Coaches’ Poll, just behind Syracuse University. Both teams are undefeated this season, though Syracuse leads UConn in points with 961, while the Huskies have 911. The closest team to these two leaders is North Carolina, with a 13-1 record and 885 points.
UConn has two remaining games this season, the first on Wednesday against UMass, and the final regular season and conference game against Georgetown in Washington on Oct. 31.
Following the regular season, the Big East Championship will be held in Norfolk, Virginia on Friday, Nov. 6. The first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament will begin on Saturday Nov. 14, (location to be determined) with the championship on the following Friday in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
