Women’s Hockey: Huskies drop two-game series at Clarkson

The UConn women’s hockey team travelled to Potsdam, New York, this weekend for a two game series against fourth ranked Clarkson University. The Huskies returned to Storrs with two losses against the Golden Knights.

The Huskies’ first game of the series on Friday afternoon ended in a 3-1 loss for UConn. The Huskies held a 1-0 lead through the first period and well into the second. The Huskies lone goal was scored by freshman Jordy Zacharias, her third with the Huskies. With two minutes remaining in the second period, the Golden Knights scored back-to-back goals before intermission. Clarkson extended their lead to 3-1 on a goal scored by Olivia Howe, her fifth of the season.

Elaine Chuli, goaltender for the Huskies recorded her second game of the season in which she saved over 50 shots. Her total for Friday was 52 saves in 60 minutes.  

UConn returned to Cheel Arena Saturday afternoon for their second game against Clarkson. Neither team saw any goals in the first period despite the 20 shots on goal Clarkson attempted. It wasn’t until the second period when Clarkson put a goal on the board with a shot from Cayley Mercer, their leading scorer.

The Huskies fought back in the third period and managed to take the lead after putting up two goals. The first of UConn’s goals came from senior Margaret Zimmer on a power play goal. UConn took the lead with a goal from Jordy Zacharias, her second of the weekend. Clarkson tied it up again with two minutes left on the clock, before scoring the final and winning goal with one minute remaining.

Chuli recorded 43 saves for the Huskies in the second game of the weekend. Her total saves for the season reached 95 this weekend.

The Huskies’ overall record is now 4-6-2, with a 1-4 record in their conference.

UConn will host University of Vermont in their next game, Friday Nov. 20 at Freitas Ice Forum. Over the weekend the Huskies will travel to Orono, Maine, to face the University of Maine. Both weekend games are in conference games.
