The UConn softball team topped local opponent UMass 6-3 in the first half of a fall doubleheader Sunday at Burrill Family Field.
The Huskies got off to a rocky start in the first inning. Four hits and a shortstop error led to a 3-0 UMass lead. Carli Cutler, the Husky starter, locked-in for her next three innings, not giving up another run.
After two failures to bring home a runner, UConn got on the board in the fourth inning. Kelli Bates hit a leadoff double, was moved to third on a sacrifice by Olivia Sappington, and then scored on a two-base error by the UMass right fielder. A wild pitch and an Ally Hernandez RBI single followed, making the score 3-2 UMass after four innings.
The Huskies didn’t stop there. Katie Koshes came in to pitch in the top of the fifth and was dominant. In the bottom of the inning, with runners on first and second, a UMass error led to the tying run scoring for UConn. After loading the bases, Valerie Sadowl’s one-out double scored two runners. A sac fly brought home another, making the score 6-3 UConn. This score would go final as the Huskies took the first of a double-header.
