Four of University of Connecticut’s five campuses were included in a list of the best colleges in Connecticut.
UConn’s Storrs campus, as well as the satellite campuses in Stamford, Waterbury and Avery Point, were listed on College Choice’s list of the 20 best colleges in Connecticut. The Storrs campus was listed in third place while Stamford was ranked ninth place. Avery Point was given 11th place and Waterbury took 13th place.
UConn spokesperson Stephanie Reitz said that though rankings don’t capture everything about a university, UConn is always happy to see the school’s quality recognized.
“We hope [the rankings] are informative for potential students and families. This ranking reflects UConn’s academic strength and the diversity of its programs at all of our campuses, which draw some of the best and brightest from around the nation,” Reitz said.
Dr. Stuart Brown, the Director of Student Services at UConn Waterbury, said the campus recognition is due to its focus on undergraduate learning and student success.
“This focus is resonating with students and parents within our geographic boundaries. Our over 26 percent increase in freshman enrollment for Fall 2017 is reflective of this acknowledgment,” said Brown.
Students who attend these campuses expressed excitement that they were recognized.
“I think it’s exciting for [Avery Point] to win and for the satellite campuses to get some attention because we usually get ignored and hidden in the shadow of Storrs,” said Avery Point student and fifth-semester marine sciences major Sarah Baseler.
Baseler said she loves how small the Marine Science department is because it offers more jobs, research opportunities and the chance for students to build closer relationships with professors.
“People don’t really know that there actually are specific departments at the satellite campuses so maybe this will shed more light on them,” Baseler said.

The rankings were based on several factors, including retention rate, cost of tuition, emphasis on student development and academic reputation.
“What we’ve found is a list of Connecticut schools that ensure your academic experience and personal, professional formation,” the College Choice website says.
College Choice is a website devoted to helping high school students choose a college to attend. It ranks colleges in several categories and based on different factors. It also offers guides to navigating the Common Application system and financial aid process.
The information collected comes from the universities’ and colleges’ websites, PayScale, U.S. News and World Report, and The National Center for Education Statistics.
