After sweeping a series with Union College last weekend, the UConn Huskies women’s hockey team is back in action this weekend against Boston College and Boston University.
UConn (3-2-0, 0-1-0 WHEA) head coach Chris MacKenzie explained what it’s like preparing for two different opponents in one weekend.
“It’s part of our league and every team has to deal with it,” MacKenzie said. “We focus on our process of preparation the same way for each opponent.”
After a five-point weekend sophomore Briana Colangelo, was named the Women’s Hockey East Player of the Week.
On Friday, the Huskies will face the Eagles (3-0) at home. The last time these two teams played the game ended in a 4-4 tie after overtime, but UConn lost the two matchups prior to the overtime tie.
The Eagles are coming off a 4-2 win against Quinnipiac on Tuesday.
Freshman Darly Watts is the player to watch on the Boston College roster. Watts tallied five points against Minnesota-Duluth on the weekend of Oct. 5, including a hat trick during one game, as the Eagles earned a weekend sweep.
BC is coached by three-time U.S. Olympian Katie Crowley. This is her 10th season as head coach of the Eagles. Crawley’s teams have featured three U.S. Olympians.
On Sunday, the Huskies will head to Massachusetts to face Boston University. So far this season, the Terriers are 0-3. Before the season began, BU was picked to finish third in Hockey East by the leagues’ head coaches.
However, the Terrier are coming off two losses to cross-town rival Northeastern, including one in overtime.
UConn defeated BU in two of three matchups last season.
The player to watch for BU is senior Victoria Bach. Last season, Bach was a Hockey East First Team All-Star. She was also the WHEA scoring champion with 35 points in conference play.
The Terriers are coached by Brian Durocher who is in his 13th season in the position. Durocher is the only coach in Hockey East to have won 20 playoff games in his career.
Coach MacKenzie expressed optimism about his team for the upcoming weekend.
“I feel our team is ready for a big challenge like BC and BU,” MacKenzie said. “We will know a lot about ourselves after this weekend.”
