In the 1960s, a “blue bike” bike-sharing program existed under University of Connecticut President Homer Babbidge. The bikes began to disappear in the winter of 1967.
According to a Dec. 4, 1967, Daily Campus article, repairing the bikes became very intensive, and independent companies had to be brought in to work on the bikes. The university asked that anyone who saw a bike from the program that was missing and not yet recovered report it to maintenance.
