There was controversy in February 1969 over a potential sabotage of “Confrontation ‘69,” a theatre department production that satirized the Chicago Democratic National Convention, the Students for a Democratic Society and the UConn Administration.
“Two nights ago a cable supporting an actor portraying former President Johnson broke,” the Daily Campus reported.
The Daily Campus reported that the administration did not tell the department they could not do the play, but rumors circulated that the administration was “not too pleased” about the production.
Michael Gregoric, the play’s director, emphasized that the production was not a political tool.
“‘69 is not a political production,” Gregoric said, “but a theatrical production with political overtones.”
