There was a fair share of Huskies celebrating wins this past weekend: Women’s basketball beat UCF on the road, baseball won two-of-three against No. 4 Louisville and men’s hockey won a thriller in overtime against BU. Let’s take a look at some individual performances that really stood out in winning and losing efforts.
Napheesa Collier, Women’s Basketball
Napheesa Collier was named The American’s Conference Player of the Week for her effort in UConn’s 78-41 victory over UCF. In the team’s fifth-consecutive win, Collier lead the third-ranked Huskies with 18 points, 11 rebounds and five assists in 31 minutes. The Huskies sit at 23-2 with five game to go.
Christian Fedko, Baseball
UConn baseball started the season with a pair of big wins thanks, in part, to Christian Fedko. The sophomore infielder cranked a grand slam in the top of the third inning in Sunday’s rubber game against No. 4 Louisville to give the Huskies a 4-1 lead, eventually winning 8-3. Fedko was named to The American’s weekly honor roll for his performance in the program’s first series win over a top-five team under head coach Jim Penders.
Alexander Payusov, Men’s Hockey
Before BU held the Huskies scoreless Saturday, Alexander Payusov capped off UConn’s third-straight win with a game-winning goal in overtime Friday night. Originally up 2-0, the Huskies found themselves knotted up at two with the Terriers at the end of three periods. The Huskies put up three shots in just 51 seconds, ending with Payusov’s goal off the rebound of a Karl El-mir shot in the extra period.
Sydney Watson, Women’s Lacrosse
Though James Madison University proved to be too much for UConn women’s lacrosse, Sydney Watson still had herself a day. The freshman scored five points on four goals and an assist in the Huskies’ 18-9 loss, the team’s third straight to start the year.
Omar Gebril, Men’s Track & Field
Men’s track and field traveled to URI over the weekend for a one-on-one meet with the Rams in what ended up a special day for Omar Gebril. The sophomore from North Haven, Connecticut won his first collegiate race when he crossed the finish line in 49.75 seconds in the 400-meter event.
