The men’s track and field team raced out of the block to begin their outdoor season at the North Florida Spring Break Invitational over the weekend.
Several Huskies picked up where they left off in the winter, and other athletes rejoined the team after sitting out the indoor season.
Freshman Konstantin Rust placed fourth in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.41 seconds. Junior Jordan Torney set a new personal best in the 400m hurdles, finishing fourth with a time of 53.33 seconds in his first race after sitting out the indoor season. Wellington Ventura finished seventh in the 400m hurdles, clocking in at 54.15 seconds.
Sophomore Tyler Gleen set a new personal best in the 1500m run, finishing fifth with a time of 4:01.62. Seniors Kyle Brackman and Michael McGonnigle and sophomore Eric Van Der Els claimed first, second and fourth place in the 5000m run with times of 14:40.51, 14:44.59 and 14:51.26 respectively.
The Huskies had very strong performances in the field events, recording a number of top-10 finishes.
Sophomore Safir Scott returned to the team after taking the indoor season off and won the high jump with a height of 2.12 meters (6-feet 11.5-inches), matching his personal best from last year’s AAC Outdoor Championships.
Senior Malik Snead, coming off of a victory in the triple jump at the AAC Indoor Championships, finished third in the long jump with a distance of 7.28 meters (23-feet 10.75-inches). Devin McShane and Torney placed first and fifth in the pole vault, recording distances of 4.75 meters (15-feet 7-inches) and 4.45 meters (14-feet 7.25-inches). Torney set a new personal best with his result.
Sophomores Todd Steuber and Matt Brady placed fifth and sixth in the shot put, recording distances of 16.97 meters (55-feet 8.25-inches) and 16.25 meters (53-feet 3.75-inches). Steuber’s result was his best throw outdoors, and Brady was competing for the first time after sitting out the Indoor season and the previous outdoor season.
The Huskies will compete in the Florida Relays at the University of Florida next weekend.
