The UConn women’s lacrosse team ended the season with a perfect game. The Huskies defeated ECU, who was coming off a six-game losing streak, by a score of 17-7. The season hasn’t been the best record-wise for the Huskies, but they continued playing hard through their final game.
Senior Caitlin Leary approached the final game of her UConn career with her best effort. Leary started strong, executing on the assist from Lexi Kenneally in the opening minutes of the game. Leary then added two more points in the second half of the game.
Leary, along with freshman Lia Laprise, turned up big in the Huskies’ win. As the era of the seniors is ending, a new one is beginning for the freshmen. LaPrise contributed to five of the Huskies’ points, with four of them being her very own goals.
Alongside LaPrise, sophomore Sydney Watson had major contributions to the win. She landed three of the eight shots she took, with an additional point on an assist to LaPrise. Watson will be entering next season as an upperclassman and will be a joy to watch as she takes on whatever opponent the Huskies face. She’s fearless in her game and has confidence in herself, as well as in her team every match.
The Huskies (3-14, 1-4 The American) didn’t have a close match; their other two victories against the University of Albany and Bryant University were tight games. Yet they made sure to limit East Carolina’s points, causing them to be scattered throughout the game. ECU (5-12, 0-5 The American) only managed to score three point on the Huskies in the first half of the game, compared to UConn’s ten first half points.
The final game and final chance at a victory was nothing short of a team effort. The season as a whole may not have gone the way the Huskies wanted, but it ended in a way they won’t forget. Their constant positivity and ability to keep their heads high in turmoil has allowed them to keep pushing through with the season, and this optimism has finally paid off.
