The No. 28 UConn men’s soccer team stumbled to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Yale Bulldogs Wednesday night at Reese Stadium in New Haven.
Jordan Hall nearly gave UConn the lead in the 16th minute, but had his attempt saved over the bar by Yale goalkeeper Elian Haddock. Senior midfielder Ryan Matteo opened the scoring for the Bulldogs as he gathered the ball at the top of the box and fired home a well-placed shot in the 31st minute. Just two minutes later, senior midfielder Miguel Yuste doubled the Yale lead as he converted a penalty shot. Mateo then added his second goal of the game with a beauty of a strike from 25 yards out in the 36th minute and Yale cruised into halftime with a three goal lead.
The Huskies outshot Yale in the second half 6-2, but were unable to get on the board. Haddock saved Dayonn Harris’ shot in the 64th minute and stoned freshman Jayden Reid’s attempt on the rebound.
The defeat marked the Huskies first loss to their in-state rivals in 27 years, and second straight overall after they fell to Fairleigh Dickinson 2-1 at home on Friday.
UConn will travel to No. 6 Georgetown on Saturday.
