Women’s Tennis: Huskies start early spring season undefeated

In their second match of the Spring campaign, Connecticut remained undefeated after beating Fairfield University, 6-1, on their home courts at Magic Lincer Tennis Academy in Manchester.

Leading the squad was Olivia Wright, a junior from Glen Allen, VA, who went 2-0 at the match. Wright first competed in a doubles competition where she was paired with freshman Victoria Matos, and the pair took the 6-2 win.

Wright didn’t stop there, though. She then competed in a singles match, winning it 7-5.

Junior Maria Constantinou also had quite the match, going undefeated in singles and doubles. Constantinou was in the second singles position, where she had a 6-2, 6-0 victory in straight sets. In the doubles match, Constantinou was paired with senior Nansi Toskova and the two came out with a 6-4 triumph.

After Wright and Matos’ doubles win, freshman Caroline Hinshaw and junior Isabel Petri Bere paired up and sealed a 6-3 dub.

“This was a nice win over a very good Fairfield team today,” coach Glenn Marshall said postgame. “Overall, a very good day as we played well in many of the areas we worked on in practice this past week.”

With the team’s dominating win over the Stags, they look to improve their winning streak to five matches as they head to two more this weekend, both in West Point, NY. Friday, they will be up against St. Bonaventure at 5 p.m. and Saturday they will play against Army at 11 a.m. Last season against Army, Wright, who had just transferred in from Providence College, had the match of her career, with a three-set triumph with the final scores of 7-5, 6-4, 10-6.

Wright and Matos, her doubles partner, also won the Doubles Flight A Championship at the Army West Point Invitational last fall.
