The UConn men’s golf team is back in action after two weeks off to compete in Napa, CA, in the Pathway to Progression tournament.
The season has gone well for the Huskies. They are coming off their third team win of the 2023-24 season at the Surf Club Invitational Championship. The other two came to the Big East Match Play and the UConn Invitational at Greathorse.
The men have had their fair share of traveling to beautiful destinations, most notably Humacao, Puerto Rico, for the Palmas Del Mar Intercollegiate, and that trend won’t stop this week. They travel to the west coast to compete on a challenging course in the wine valley of Napa.
The course, which is held at the Silverado Resort, offers two difficult courses. The North Course front nine is 6,973 yards in total, par 72, and has a rating of 72.6. One spot that may be difficult for the Huskies is hole No. 6. The 431-yard shot can be into a headwind, and with obstacles surrounding the fairway, it’s important to hit shots down the middle.
Another hole on the front nine that will potentially cause problems for the Huskies is No. 15. Although a 187-yard par three, hitting to the left or right of the green will be sure to add extra strokes to the round.
On the South Course back nine, it is more of the same. A total of 6,685 yards for par 72, there are a handful of obstacles to get passed. On hole No. 2 around the green, there are three bunkers surrounding it. If the Huskies avoid them, they can use the flat green to sink a potential birdie.
The 18th hole on the back nine sports one of the bigger greens on the whole course. With some momentum, UConn can finish out the competition strong on this 500-yard par five.
One Husky to keep your eye on is junior Ray Dennehy. For his efforts in the Surf Club Invite, he was named the Big East Men’s Golfer of the Week. In his second round, he shot a 64, which gave him the best round of the season of any UConn golfer and the second-best in program history. If he can replicate this performance in California, expect UConn to submit a stellar performance.
Back in February, senior Tommy Dallahan was also named Big East Golfer of the Week after taking third place at Palmas Del Mar Intercollegiate. He and Dennehy will help the Huskies and their quest for another team victory.
The Pathway to Progression tournament will begin on Monday and wrap up Tuesday. Coverage of the match can be found at uconnhuskies.com
