The University of Connecticut’s Student Union Board of Governors kicked off this week’s spring weather by hosting events in celebration of sustainability week.

Yesterday, the university’s largest student-run organization held a farmer’s market on UConn’s Fairfield Way.

The event began at 1 p.m. and hosted a variety of student-run and local used clothing companies, accompanied by free food and merchandise giveaways.

“This week we have been trying to support the efforts on campus around sustainability,” fourth-semester student and event organizer Brianna McCalla said.

Other events that SUBOG hosted included pottery painting, succulent planting and a trip to New York City’s Botanical Garden, ending yesterday with the farmer’s market.

In addition to free food, students could browse used clothes from three different thrift operatives.

“We are trying to support university and local businesses,” McCalla said. “We have Broadbin Vintage, Urban Collection and Closet Lockdown here today because all their businesses are part of the community.”

Additionally, SUBOG let students spin a wheel and get a prize based on where their spins landed. McCalla explained that the prizes they offered were items that had been sitting in SUBOG’s storage.

These free items included mugs, cups, Jonathan Husky toys, mystery bags and more.

While lines were long, hundreds of students stopped by SUBOG’s farmer’s market to see what free items they could get.

If you missed yesterday’s event, SUBOG will be hosting additional events for students throughout this week.

“We have spring weekend coming up,” McCalla said. “On Thursday, we have Joe Girardi coming; he is a broadcaster and former Yankees player. On Friday, ‘Please Don’t Destroy’ is coming as part of our comedy show, and lastly, on Saturday, we have a food truck festival where dozens of food trucks will be on campus handing out food.”
