Women’s Tennis: Huskies pack their bags for Orlando for Spring Break Tennis event

The UConn women’s tennis team will travel to Orlando, Fla., for a two-game slate at Spring Break Tennis.

Spring Break Tennis is a collegiate and high school tennis event featuring over 300 teams across the country hosted by the United States Tennis Association.

The Huskies (9-2, 4-0) are riding a three-match winning streak coming into the event. On Friday, they defeated Eastern Kentucky 4-2.

In No. 1 singles, fourth-year Olivia Wright defeated third–year Masha Fedenko to earn her second consecutive singles victory. This improved her No. 1 singles record to 7-4 on the season and 12-10 overall. Wright was named the Big East Singles Player of the Week on Tuesday following her performance.

UConn will play their first match on Saturday against Marquette. The Golden Eagles (3-12, 1-3) come into the matchup on a dry spell, having dropped their past four consecutive matches. They already have a match at the event under their belt after being swept 7-0 by Villanova on Monday.

Despite their recent struggles, Marquette does boast the all-time advantage over the Huskies. The Golden Eagles are 7-0 all-time against UConn, five of those wins being sweeps. This will be their first meeting since 2012, when Marquette earned a 7-0 sweep victory.

Fourth-year Tiera Jarmond has been a standout for the Golden Eagles this season, she has a 13-8 overall record this season in singles competition. Jarmond is also 13-6 in doubles alongside fifth-year Andie Weise.

UConn is currently undefeated against opponents in the Big East with a record of 4-0. Meanwhile, Marquette has struggled in their conference slate, winning only one of their four matches so far.

The Huskies’ sunshine state action will continue Tuesday when they take on another Wisconsin opponent in Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The Panthers (6-7) have won two of their last three games. In their most recent contest, they fell to Northern Iowa 3-4. This will be the inaugural meeting for these two teams.

Milwaukee second-year Emilia Durska has won her last three straight singles matches bringing her record on the season to 12-6.  Third-year Nadiia Konieva and first year Nikola Nikolajeva have been the top doubles pair for the Panthers with a 10-7 record.

Spring Break Tennis will be an opportunity for the Huskies to continue their recent momentum and strengthen their foothold in the conference, while enjoying the beautiful Florida weather.

The action will kick off at 12 p.m. on Saturday at the USTA National Campus.
