This weekend, the Huskies hosted the Butler Bulldogs at home in a three-game series. The team played three games and finished with a 2-1 record, narrowly winning the first game of the doubleheader on Friday, with a score of 10-9. They came up short in the second game, finishing with a final score of 4-9. The program finished up the series on Sunday, winning 5-3.
The Huskies’ recent games captured the fierceness of key players. On Sunday, junior infielder Kaiea Higa extended her hitting streak to 11 games, a season record. She also drove runs in seven of her last eight games. In that game, senior Lexi Hasting also dominated, having her 12th multi-hit and fifth multi-RBI game of the season. Another key player is junior catcher Grace Jenkins, who recorded her 10th multi-hit game this season on Sunday. She also hit two doubles in the game, marking her second time doing so this season. Freshman infielder Cat Pettey also had an impactful weekend for the Huskies this weekend. On Friday, she had her third three-hit game this season and tallied an RBI in her seventh straight game. These players will be integral for the Huskies as they take on UMass.
The Minutemen are coming off a 5-4 win against Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. This is UMass’s ninth win of the season with a record of 9-22. Senior Lydia Castro was an integral part of the game. Castro drove in three runs with one being a homerun that sealed the win for the team. Junior infielder Riain Keefe was also a key player in the game. Keefe started the game off strong for UMass with a triple, scoring the first run of the game. When the game was tied, she also scored a run from Castro, bringing the score to 3-2. The win was finally clinched by sophomore pitcher Hannah Streicher, who threw 1.1 scoreless innings at the end of the game. These three players will be essential players for UMass against the Huskies.
The Huskies last matched up against UMass in a regular-season game last season, where they defeated the Minutemen 5-3. The matchup was played at Sortino Field, the home field of the Minutemen. The game had a slow start, but the Huskies were able to top UMass by the end.
