Volleyball: Huskies strive to keep their undefeated streak after a successful home opener

The UConn volleyball team heads to New Haven, Conn., to take on Yale, Fairfield and Northeastern in a weekend series. With their undefeated record of 6–0, Connecticut is hoping to build on a dominant streak that includes three victories at the Bearcat Classic and a complete sweep of the Top Dogs Challenge.

After beginning the year with sweeps over Lehigh and Fordham and a tight five-set win against Binghamton, the Huskies returned to Storrs for the Top Dogs Challenge. There, they had 3–1 victories against South Dakota, Ball State and Colgate to maintain their flawless record.

UConn’s success has been driven by strong performances across the roster. Outside hitter Emma Werkmeister led the team with big numbers last weekend, including 18 kills against Ball State and 21 more in the win over Colgate. Middle Grace Maria has been efficient at the net, reaching a career-high at 13 kills and two aces against Colgate while hitting .478 against Ball State. Setter Doga Kutlu continues to lead the offense, averaging over nine assists per set while contributing defensively with digs. Audrey Rome has provided steady blocking and kills in moments of pressure, while sophomore libero McKenna Brand was named Big East Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Husky defense in the Top Dogs Challenge last weekend. Jess Perry also continues to provide consistent defensive support and dependable passing.

The Bulldogs (0-3) have had a rough start to their season, still looking for their first win after dropping matches in both the Villanova Classic and their season opener. This will be the fifth meeting between the Huskies and Bulldogs, with both teams holding two victories each in their previous four meetings. Yale will be hoping to protect their home court, secure their first win of the season, and hand UConn its first loss in New Haven.

Meanwhile, UConn’s offensive efficiency led by Werkmeister, Kutlu and Maria has been the key to their early success. Head Coach Ellen Herman-Kimball has pointed to the team’s resilience as a key factor, noting their ability to stay composed and close out sets under pressure.

For UConn, this game is a chance to protect their perfect record and continue to prepare for Big East play. A win over Yale would help UConn maintain momentum and build confidence for upcoming conference matchups.

The matchup will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, in New Haven.
