New Sheriff in Chapel Hill: Belichick Era Off to Rocky Start

What was expected to be a turnaround and revitalization for the North Carolina football program has turned into a season full of question marks. Under the leadership of legendary Super Bowl-winning Head Coach Bill Belichick, the Tar Heels came into the season with high aspirations. Donations poured in, and top transfers committed to UNC, sparking excitement, but amid a slow start, the season has quickly turned into concern.

The Tarheels started the season off 2-3 with both of their wins coming against non-power five opponents. North Carolina beat Charlotte, 20-3, and Richmond 41-6. However, the other three games, two of which came against Power Five opponents, have been a completely different story.

As for the three losses, the Heels have been outscored 120 to 33. Belichick has two options at quarterback in Gio Lopez and Max Johnson, who have been splitting time. Johnson has taken care of the ball well and limited turnovers compared to Lopez’s three turnovers in two of the three games. Both quarterbacks also hold a completion percentage just around 63%.

Overall, UNC has been solid on the ground as they average just about 3.7 yards per carry. If they hope to rack up more wins and secure a bowl berth, they will need to lean on the run game even more.

Demon June has been the Tar Heels’ leader in the backfield as he holds 266 of the team’s total 511 yards on the year. Lopez has nearly matched June in carries; however, he has 69 yards on the year. In the passing game, the quarterbacks will continue to rely on Jordan Schipp; their leading receiver makes big plays as he has 18 receptions on the year with two touchdowns.

The defense has also struggled. In the three games against Power 5 opponents TCU and Clemson, the defense gave up 120 points. They have also let up significant yards to opposing offenses; however, there is promise. In previous games, the defense has mustered seven turnovers in total, with four of them being interceptions. They also have seven sacks on the year that have accumulated for 43 lost yards.

Looking ahead the Tar Heels will have a lot of work to do as they head into the bulk of ACC play. They will notably play No. 19 Virginia, and rival Duke towards the end of the season at home. UNC will also have a lot to look forward to as Belichick will go through his first full recruiting season having already boasted a top twenty class in the nation. This includes 6 four-star recruits, with the most notable being 6-foot-5 and 205-pound quarterback Travis Burgess. They should also boast a good transfer class, as Belichick is a huge draw for athletes with aspirations of going pro.

Only time will tell for this North Carolina program, but the panic button should not be hit yet. Even with the greatest coach of all time and strong NIL backing, building a contender doesn’t just happen overnight. The foundation is being laid, and while growing pains are clear, the potential is just as evident. If UNC can find their rhythm, this rocky start could lead to a spark and a mid-season turnaround for the program.
