Men’s Hockey: No. 13 UConn on the road for CT Ice Tournament

To wrap up their non-conference slate for the season, the UConn men’s hockey team will hit the road to New Haven for the sixth annual CT Ice Tournament. Between the four DI hockey teams in the state of Connecticut with UConn, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart and Yale, the teams compete every season for a trophy at the CT Ice Tournament.

“I think it’s a rehearsal for what’s to come in March,” said UConn head coach Mike Cavanaugh. “It really lets you evaluate your team in a winner-take-all type-game.”

This season’s tournament will be hosted by Yale at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, Conn. The No. 13 Huskies will open up the tournament on Friday, Jan. 23, against Yale with puck-drop at 7:30 p.m. In the other opening round, No. 6 Quinnipiac will face Sacred Heart with puck-drop at 4:00 p.m. A championship game and constellation round will take place on Saturday, Jan. 24 at the same times.

“We know Yale is playing extremely well,” explained Cavanaugh on Wednesday. “We know we’re going to have a real formidable opponent on our hands this Friday night.”

UConn is coming off a weekend series split with Vermont where the Huskies totaled six goals. The line of senior Ryan Tattle, juniors Joey Muldowney and Jake Richard has been top notch for the Huskies in recent play finding their offensive stride. Against Vermont, the trio either scored or assisted four of the six goals over the weekend. At the beginning of the week, the team announced the Huskies have three players nominated for the Hobey Baker Award: Tyler Muszelik, Muldowney and Richard. Additionally, Tattle was named a nominee for the 2026 Hockey Humanitarian Award.

As for Yale, the Bulldogs are entering this matchup with a 7-11-0 overall record and coming off two wins over RPI and Union last weekend. After the 2-0 weekend, the ECAC conference named James Shannon Rookie of the Week and sophomore Noah Pak earned MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week recognition.

The Huskies return to the CT Ice Tournament as the reigning champs. Last season, they defeated Quinnipiac in game one of the tournament with a final score of 2-1 in an overtime match. UConn then went on to the championship round against Sacred Heart, taking the 1-0 victory to secure their first ever CT Ice Championship down in Fairfield, Conn.

The annual CT Ice Tournament will commence on Friday, Jan. 23, with the Huskies facing Yale in the opening round. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. in New Haven. UConn will face Quinnipiac or Sacred Heart in the constellation round or championship game on Saturday, Jan. 24, depending on Friday night’s results. The CT Ice Tournament games will be available to stream on ESPN+.
