The UConn women’s basketball program is often known for making history.
On Monday night, Azzi Fudd added a few pages of her own into the UConn history books, but more importantly, the WNBA.
Fudd was drafted No. 1 overall to the Dallas Wings, making her the seventh No. 1 overall pick in UConn history.
The Arlington, Va., native now joins Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Tina Charles, Maya Moore, Breanna Stewart and both her former and new teammate Paige Bueckers.

Bueckers was drafted No. 1 overall to the Wings in 2025, and now, with Fudd, it marks the third time UConn has had players selected as the first pick of the draft in back-to-back years.
“Azzi Fudd is one of the best shooters in our game today,” Wings General Manager Curt Miller said in a statement on the team’s website. “In an outstanding draft class, she stood out to us not only with her basketball skills but with her intangibles. She is a great teammate and has outstanding basketball IQ. Azzi brings to the Wings the type of character that we want in our locker room. We are ecstatic to add her to our Wings family.”
Despite a career at UConn plagued by injuries, Fudd managed to make the best out of the time she was out on the court.
Fudd was a part of the 2025 National Championship team and was the 2025 NCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
In addition, Fudd was one of the catalysts in leading UConn to its undefeated 2025-26 season, averaging her personal best of 17.7 points per game and earning 2026 WBCA All-American Honors.
“Every single thing we did was with discipline, with intensity,” Fudd said, according to an article from USA Today. “We did it the right way. That winning mentality, that culture, the ‘we’ mindset…being able to read your defender, learning tendencies to the offensive player, but not being so confined and being able to just play.”
Fudd’s mother, Katie, was drafted by the Sacramento Monarchs in 2001, so the Fudd family is no stranger as to what it takes to get to the WNBA.
With training camp set to begin on April 19, Fudd is excited for all of the opportunities she has in front of her.
“I’m just excited to be in a new city, to learn from the players around me, to get to play with these incredible players, to learn from the coach. I’m excited for everything,” Fudd said in an article from USAToday.
