Here at Opinion, we try to make well-crafted articles with arguments supported by strong evidence. But sometimes we just want to collaborate with each other on not-so-serious topics! That’s what Roundtables are for! So today, Opinion asks its writers, what really old fashion trend would you bring back into the modern scene?
Gianna Cassino, Weekly Columnist:
As underrated as she is, I will take any opportunity to hype up the giornea. This 15th century Italian overgarment is kind of like a toga’s cooler younger sister. I’m a big fan of a cape, so naturally, a combination cape/dress thing is the way to my heart.
Colin Hamilton, Weekly Columnist:

Bring me back to my togas. Light weight, airy, stylish and fit for any climate, a toga resurgence would give society exactly what it needs: a versatile, unisex formal wear that screams of class, culture and haughty elitism. With togas, the comfort of the groutfit could be met with the style of the well-tailored suit. Once again, we could lounge about on our lectī, lazily wasting our days away in vain ignorance of the world’s many problems. All the while, we would maintain our images of refined dignity in imitation of the marble statues that our museums hold. To that I say: “Valete modis saeculi vicesemi primi celeris, salve togae!”
Ayden Mirabella, Campus Correspondent:
Uniforms for armed forces are too serious now. We ought to bring back the French Pantalon rouge from WW1. Make it like a circus out there with all manner of colors. Instead of ugly greens and camo, make a statement with bright red pants. It’s easier to blend in because you don’t look like a soldier. Remember, Peter Griffin said “You’re all stupid. They’re going to be looking for army guys.” In green and camo, you look like the army, but in blue overcoats and red pants you look like you lost your clown car on the way to the circus. A genius idea nobody would expect.
Patrick Minnerly, Associate Opinion Editor:
We need to bring back the trusty cloak. Cloaks make any outfit look so much cooler and are sadly missing from modern fashion. What’s more, they can really be used for any purpose. Need a garment to protect you during your travels on the road? Grab a traveling cloak! Are you looking for a fun outfit to wear to a formal event? Put on a fancy cloak and be the life of the party. Also, if you’re secretly a wizard, cloaks are the way to go. So return to that medieval fantasy energy and get yourself a flowing cloak today.
Alexander Renzulli, Campus Correspondent:
We (the people) used to have aura as a country. And then for some unknown reason, we gained independence and ditched those sick coats that allowed the boy George to looksmax the lobsterbacks whilst crossing the Delaware. Seriously, Paul Revere had to be looking on fleek while warning the people of Beantown of the dastardly Brits’ arrival. Anyways. Give me liberty. Don’t give me death, but please give me a blue overcoat that I can defend Yorktown in. God bless.
