Women’s Tennis: UConn splits Big East Championship series

The No. 5 ranked UConn women’s tennis squad split the Big East Championship series, upsetting No. 4 Georgetown 4-2 and falling 3-4 to No. 1 Xavier.

The Huskies, 12-8 overall and 4-3 in the conference, began their final weekend of the season against Georgetown on Friday. This was the second time the Huskies and Hoyas faced off this year, as they met in early April with the Huskies falling 3-4. In the April matchup, the Huskies struggled in doubles play, with Husky duos Victoria Matos/Madison Mcleod and Isabella Asenov/Cameron Didion falling short in their matches.

This past weekend, the Huskies changed the narrative with both doubles duos, Chloe Lomas/Ela Platenikova and Matos/Mcleod, beating their Georgetown counterparts 6-4. The Huskies have excelled in doubles play this season, beating difficult competitors like Marquette and Bryant.

Singles play was slightly more competitive as Georgetown took three out of the six matches. Georgetown’s Emily Novikov beat Platenikova 6-4 and 6-0, and Julia Chu beat Lomas 6-4 and 6-2. UConn’s Didion, Matos and Asenov all won their singles matches.

On Saturday, the Huskies took on No. 1 seed Xavier for the first time this season, falling 3-4. Xavier, 15-8 overall and 4-0 in the conference, has enjoyed an exceptional season, sweeping five teams throughout the season: Northern Kentucky, Lipscomb, Cleveland State, Marquette and Butler. The Musketeers also swept Creighton and UPenn 4-0 in mid-March.

Despite the Huskies’ loss this weekend, UConn showcased resilient skill in singles play. Lomas, Matos and Asenov all overcame Xavier competitors, Madeleine Rexroat, Ella DeFord and Abigail Siminski. UConn’s Platenikova, Didion and Mcleod all fell in singles play.

The Huskies were swept in doubles play with Lomas/Platenikova and Didion/Asenov falling to the Musketeers.

While Xavier will be advancing to the NCAA tournament in early May, UConn’s season has come to an end. The Huskies enjoyed a strong year and will be losing valuable senior Didion.
