Roundtable: If you were a campus celebrity, what would you be known for?

Here at Opinion, we love our campus celebrities. Whether it’s for their style, their mode of transportation or their presence at UConn Late Night karaoke, there are a multitude of reasons we know and love them. It takes a certain kind of person to be known across campus, perhaps the same kind of person willing to regularly put controversial opinions out into the world. Today, we turn to our writers with the following question: If you were a campus celebrity, what would you be known for?

Thanks to the multitude of theatre classes I’m taking in Austin this semester, I spend at least two days a week in the Beanery reading Shakespeare and experimental plays for hours on end. It’s me, my chai latte and my scripts against the world. Perhaps my curse is to forever be known as the girl who pulls up to the Beanery with a new Shakespeare play every week. Hopefully I look really intellectual and not performative or incredibly stressed. Alas, the world may never know.

My schedule sucks. 20 credits, a job, two columns in this paper, volunteering, an internship, my many extracurriculars – when all is said and done, I am left barely alive.

As a result of my poor calendar management, I have come to realize that late at night, Babbidge becomes a liminal space. It exists outside of time and space, in a purgatory state that brings a whole new meaning to the “graveyard shift.” If I were to become recognized for anything, then, it would be my haunting of those old shelves. Come by the third floor at the right hour, and there you’ll see me: ethereally floating along the worn, off-color carpet, coffee in one hand and papers in the other, searching for the right study space to claim for the night.

Among a group of five people (friends of a friend), I am known as one thing and one thing only: Harry Potter. This is the case because of the student production of “Puffs” I was in my freshman year with Dramatic PAWS. Since, Harry Potter has gotten around. Harry Potter was at the Price Chopper. Nicole Kidman in “Practical Magic” looks like Harry Potter. Harry Potter was at Whitney Dining Hall. I personally would like this to keep going. Maybe one day I’ll even get to meet them.

Personally, I think it would be quite lovely to be a B list celebrity musician at the University of Connecticut, being known for fun jams and perhaps wearing a fun hat. I think that would be nice. Guitars and hats, truly what else could you ask for in life. “Look dad, it’s that super cool guy with the super cool bucket hat and the super cool guitar.” “Wow! That’s awesome!” they would say in unison. I could sell Compact Discs or perhaps a fun hat. Gee, that sounds lovely. Alternatively, if the music thing doesn’t work out, I could still be known for having a cool hat.

Patrick Minnerly, Opinion Editor

As the writer of Patrick’s Politics, I’m quite proud of the effort I put into making the column. I’d like to believe that some people on campus know about Patrick’s Politics and hopefully enjoy reading it. So, if I was a campus celebrity, I think I’d want to be known for my column, and I think this is also the most realistic pathway to achieving that fame. This would also be a future in which everyone religiously reads the newspaper, which means the literacy crisis would be solved and that The Daily Campus would reach record circulation. Was this all a shameless plug for Patrick’s Politics? Yes.

If I was a campus celebrity, I would want to be famous for having a pet ferret. Ferrets are very stinky, but it would be awesome to carry one around campus! It could sit in my scarf and everyone could say hello and pet it. I wouldn’t even feel stressed during finals because I’ve got a furry friend! They’re pocket sized. If I met anyone new I could introduce myself, and then my little ferret could peep up its little head and say hello too! I could hopefully train it to do all my chores for me so I have more time to teach it more tricks. It would eventually do my assignments for me. If only dorms allowed furry friends… (or maybe I just miss my dog…)

My one goal in life is to be known for my love of Dunkin’. Every day, I get my large refresher and 2 wake up wraps and carry that around with me as long as it can last. I own 2 pairs of sunglasses, a backpack, 2 tote bags, many cups and many shirts, all Dunkin’ branded. I want everyone to know me as the Dunkin’ girl. I want them to see those colors and think of me. Being a campus celebrity for loving Dunkin’, especially in New England, the home of the Big D, would help propel my dreams of becoming a niche internet celebrity, launching myself to fame and jump starting my acting career. I will become the face of the Dunkin’ corporation and it starts here at UConn.
