The UConn baseball and softball teams were both swept over the weekend against some stellar opponents. However, there were a few athletes who stood out. Let’s take a quick look at some of those performances.
Michael Woodworth, Baseball
Senior outfielder/infielder Michael Woodworth continued his terrific season against No. 12 ECU. Even though the Huskies dropped all three games against the Pirates, Woodworth continued to churn out hits. The most important hit for Woodworth came in the ninth inning, when he blasted a homer to bring the Huskies within two runs of tying the game. He concluded the weekend with four hits and three RBI. So far this season, Woodworth has a .359 batting average, five home runs, six doubles and 28 RBI.
Jill Stockley, Softball
Senior pitcher Jill Stockley started two games for the Huskies against No. 1 USF. UConn dropped all three games to the Bulls, but Stockley was able to limit USF’s bats. Stockley was able to mix speeds well, tossing a total of 10.1 innings and only giving up one earned run. The Massachusetts native is in the midst of a difficult season with a 1-8 record and a 5.91 ERA, but she has pitched better over her last four outings. The right hander has surrendered only one run over her last 15.1 innings pitched.
Sydney Watson, Women’s Lacrosse
Sophomore Sydney Watson did what she does best during the team’s 16-5 loss to Florida on Saturday. The Maryland native scored two of the team’s five goals during the UConn women’s lacrosse team’s senior day. The Huskies as a team have struggled so far this season with a 2-14 record, but Watson has been a major bright spot and figures to continue to make a major impact next season.
Briana Marcelino, Softball
As a team, the UConn softball team struggled to score runs over the weekend. But sophomore Briana Marcelino was able to add four more hits to her resume. The Connecticut native leads the team in batting average (.386), home runs (8), RBI (33), doubles (9) and hits (51). The Huskies have a 16-27 record and have only seven games left in the regular season. With Marcelino returning next season, the Huskies will look to continue to trend upward and build around their slugger.
